Hey guys...I've had my Asphalt 04 for about 1200 flawless miles until this morning when I started it, it did the normal cold-start 1800-2000RPM idle but after a few minutes of running, it idles up to 2500 steady. I tried to blip the throttle to get it back down and it went up to 4000RPM and stayed there until I shut it off. I shut down and restarted it to no avail, not 4000 anymore but still 2500rpm steady. I tried closing the throttle but it's at the stopper. Turning the bars lock-to-lock with no change in idle.

    Help.

The wax idle unit is known for pegging the idle at 4,000. Remove it. Disassemble. Thoroughly clean it. If it is the culprit, you will see lots of crud throughout the coolant flow paths.

Awesome I hope it's that simple. Where will I find this unit, somewhere on the throttle bodies I assume? Should I grab some coolant and flush the cooling system a few times?

The wax unit sits under the throttle bodies so you'll have some fun extracting it for the clean.

If you have removed the airbox but not the throttle bodies you can possibly save yourself some work by first checking and lubricating the stem on the plunger of the wax unit and the linkages that the wax unit moves on the throttle bodies. If they are a little stiff sometimes they do not release and keep the idle up.

I went with that because I REALLY didn't want to remove the TB's and put it all back together and it seems ok now. Also found a bit of a mouse nest in my air filter so I ordered a new one.

I know it is never a good idea to draw conclusions around the frequency of faults and failures based on internet forums, but the wax unit fault seems to crop up fairly often for the 6th gens. Maybe running some radiator flushing chemicals every couple of years might be a good preventative idea, and a lot easier than pulling the TBs out for access?

You would also wonder what other passages in any bike's cooling system were getting clogged. I know my VTR1000 has anti carb icing hot water feeds to the carbs (probably same diameter/flow as the wax unit piping), and these also block in a similar way to wax units, but because it makes no obvious difference to the running no one ever checks them.
