Hey guys, I recently bought a 1984 vf750f and have run into a few issues with it, nothing big just interesting except for the fuel tank. I've got the manual and it says it's a 22 liter tank, I'm getting about 14-15km per litre which seems fine to me compared to my last bike (1982 xj650 seca). Problem is, at around 10-11 litres or so I've gotta switch it into reserve, so it's not getting access to the rest of the gas which I'm guessing is stuck on the other side... This is my first bike with a fuel gauge and I'm aware it's a little different but what can be clogged for it to only be using essentially half the tank of gas? The other less problematic issue is that when the bike is cold at about 40km/h there's this almost electronic sound coming from the front of the bike. I've never heard a sound like this and once it warms up the sound disappears.
Hi and welcome, I have zero experience with the early models so im not gona hazard a guess without hearing the sound but hopefully a more knowledgeable member will be along in the morning. For the reserve, it just pulls fuel from a lower point in the tank. you probably can shorten the main fuel pickup to give you more time before needing to switch but it would be way more hassle then its worth.
ahh, I hope there's enough people on here with knowledge on the earlier ones. It really is a strange sound, my best guess so far is that when I get to 40 kmh the fan on the rad starts spinning making a weird noise. That being said, the fan fires up just fine once the bike gets hot enough to need it. The tank, it must be split in two or at least it has to have a high enough dent in the middle to go around the frame... but off the top of my head I would say at the very bottom of the tank (pointing towards the tail end) the two ends meet and it really shouldn't matter. I don't think the problem lies in the reserve line or where it is and like you said shortening the main pickup would be a hassle. What's just weird is that if it really is a 22 litre tank and I'm having to put it on reserve at around 10-11 litres then that would mean a ~11 litre reserve which is mental and makes no sense
