Just got a used '03 with ABS and I love it. This is the best motorcycle I have ever been on. Wanted to give it a good once-over before I go for some serious riding and caught whiff of the SV sync problem on the forums here but I'm not sure I understand it. Can someone explain to me what the problem is? Was it set incorrectly from the factory? If so if I take it to my Honda dealer will they just adjust it wrong again or do they know the corrected setting? Also what are the symptoms? Sorry for the lame post, I'm sure you guys have answered this a million times. Thanks-

If it's not broke , dont fix it..In other words if it working/running fine dont worry about it..

I agree with Nailer, but when the bike is ready for the next service, maybe get the S.V.'s set up just to be sure, and have them done by someone who is honda trained,or know what they are doing.

don't think you will ever get the right answer.
Are you are refering to the 3 > 5 grand surge? Synchronizing the SVs will not hurt anything but not sure if it will eleviate the problem (did not help mine). i have tried everything that everyone has suggested on this site from power commander to replacing the fuel pressure regulator. Nothing has really helped, just have to deal with the problem. my local Honda dealer thinks it is the ECU… they had another bike with the same problem and did everything they could to the bike, then once the ECU had been replaced the problem, although did not completely go away was to a point where it was/is as much of a problem.

my 04 didn't like to hold steady throttle right at 5k and the 7k VTEC kicking in was a bit abrupt leaned over.

I had my tech do the starter valves as well as taking off the 1 tooth smaller front sprocket PO had installed. I can definitely tell the engine management feels smoother, but how much of that is the gearing playing into the mix I can't say.

They only charged me an hour so for me it was worth it to do what I could pretty cheaply. He also recommended against me going the whole route of Power Commander etc. as my bike ran better than almost any he had ridden, and I trust the guy so I'm done with just the pipes...also FYI he said pair valve blocking and rewiring could cause major problems down the road and not to do it. So im done until I start thinking suspension(Race Tech/Penske would help I'm sure.) I;m just not riding that hard on it yet so it hasn't mattered.

Starter Valve synchronization is similar to carburetor synchronization. The procedure sets the warm (operating temp) idle opening of the throttle body butterflys so the each cylinder is drawing approximately the same amount of air/fuel mixture. This is measured using mercury manometers or vacuum gauges.

On VTEC engines the #4 cylinder is the base setting. The other three cylinders are adjusted to match it's vacuum at idle.

The symptoms of mis-adjusted starter valves are: uneven idle speed, hard starting, rattly sound at idle, vibration at idle. You may have one,two or all four.

The starter valve adjustment has no effect on engine performance at any RPM much above idle.

If your machine exhibits none of the symptoms, your starter valves do not need adjustment.

    Thanks

My machine has none of those symptoms so I'm not worried now. I just wanted to understand what that was all about - now I do. Much appreciated. I do need a new sprocket set and chain but I would like to do it myself so I can learn and also not get fisted by a dealer. Can anyone recommend some good brands? I know there are many options/price ranges for chains. I need something in the middle - I don't race but I do like spirited riding and maybe a couple track days here and there but nothing serious. Thanks again!

I just put an RK on my bike and it seems fine. I know Vinnie went with Vortex and it worked for him. I can't remember the other big name at the moment but if you do a search for 'replacing chain' I bet you'll get a lot of info.

I have an RK GB530XSO-108, but D.I.D brand is equivalent, as well as Renthal, and Tsubaki. If you are a "fancy" boy and want some color choices, EK makes a wide variety of colors. Not sure of the quality though.

Make sure NOT to use a masterlink with your chain. Permantly affix it using a chain link flaring tool (see below). Make sure to use the correct amount of flare on the pins to permantly attach it.
