Redback spider bites Australian man on penis



An Australian man has taken himself to hospital after a venomous redback spider bit him on the penis.

The tradesman was using a portable toilet on a Sydney building site on Wednesday morning when he was bitten.

A spokesperson for St George Hospital confirmed that a 21-year-old man was treated for a redback bite.

The redback spider, closely related to the black widow spider, is distinguished by a long red stripe on its abdomen.

The spider's bite causes severe pain, sweating and nausea.

The BBC spoke to the owners of the property who confirmed that the man had been bitten on the penis as described in media reports.

He was later discharged from hospital in a stable condition.

Although there are recorded cases of deaths from redback bites, none have occurred since the development of antivenom in 1956

 

Could be worse. At least its not flesh eating venom.

Eff that ... LOL ... I'll take a bear any day of the week! I can see a bear coming and they won't hide in my house finding their way in through some little crack.

We have mostly Black Bears here on the Canadian Prairies. The nasty bears are either in the mountains (Grizzlies) or up north (Polar Bears).

 

We are overrun with Dickhead Politicians, which can be every bit as detrimental to life and wellbeing...

 

Hahaha guess its a trade off then, I can crush a spider or decapitate a snake easy enough but not a bear,

Redbacks aren't that bad really. We're much more likely to become road kill than spider bait. Given that about 10 people a year are killed by cows in Australia and we've had one red back death since about 1950 I can't understand why the journos insist on giving the bugs a hard time. What about those deadly killer bovines ? The whole community is at risk from herds of slobbering, trampling, rampaging herbivores .......

 

I think we should mention that due to the proliferation of harleyfolk here in the states both genders can be quite dangerous in rut.

 

Remember after sticking my hand into an old car wrecks trunk getting bit multiple times on the back of the hand by a nest of redbacks when a kid, hand felt like it was on fire, got very sick and my fingers swelled up like fat sausages, not a feeling I'll ever forget....On another note my tablet kept trying to auto correct redback with redneck so guess it could have been worse.
