IS it jumping out of gear? Or is it missing? Big question here.
Could be shifting forks not pushing the dogs all the way into the holes.

It is not clear from what you say if this is and electrical problem or a gearbox problem.
You could try unpluging the yellow wire from the tachometer that goes to the CDI box and that is the rev limiter.
Could be a cdi box or connections problem.

You say that 4-5,000 rpm under high load is when you experience this "skipping" Are you talking about something like an electrical misfire?
That is what it sounds like. If it is under a high load, like accelerating that could be a loose battery connection etc.,.

The coils are not grounded On the VF1000F Look at the wiring diagram.
The blue wire on the rear cycl coil goes to the fuel pump relay the black/w goes to ignition(12v).
The yellow wire, front coil goes to the tachometer. Black/w goes to ignition.

If that yellow wire is loose it could cause problems since that yellow wire is hooked to the rev limiter (CDI )box.
Like if the yellow wire going to the tachometer touched ground.

I just wanted to post this info because for those that do not know the transmission has these parts:

GEARS, gears with SHIFTING DOGS, protrusions sticking out that fit into holes of gears next to them.
SHIFTING FORKS, A shifting DRUM to move the shifting forks from side to side. And on the end of the shifting drum
is a detent and roller to keep the selected gear and position of the drum rotation held in position.
    MAIN SHAFT, COUNTERSHAFT

Those steel gears with shifting dogs could be TIG welded with stellite which is a very hard surfacing material.

That's really exactly the same thing - it only depends on how long the bike was ridden that way.

That would be Dave Dodge - drp123@mindspring.com

He's your best source for V4 gearbox undercutting service. That's who I use when I'm repairing a bad gearbox and he's always done top notch work for me.

I had the same problem hopefully it's fixed. just installed the new trans found broken spacers and clips. So, Peterborough's bike wreckers has one that you can get for cheap. call them.
They just supplied me with a cam chain tensioner,as mine was cracked..

    84 vfr gear problems

with all due respect, the dogs may be taken, Gear and all of course, to a machine shop with a heliarc welder (heliarcs do extremely fine work on small pieces) and the worn dogs may be built up and reground close enough to original specs. The shift forks, if wear is the only issue, can likewlse be repaired.:eagerness:

Shift forks are typically bent first then get worn down. Bending them back and building up with weld could fix them but I would think it would only be a matter of time before they bend again.

Another failure point is the shift drum grooves getting damaged. That requires a 4-axis mill to machine.

Anything is possible with enough money!

Joseph realize that you revived a 6-year old thread which seems to have been abandoned. You will want to get into the habit of first looking at the last post date.

Yeah... except for the military, 14 billion for a troop transport that kills troops, a plane that won't fly at night or in bad weather, nuclear weapons transports (bombers) that break in half in mid air (Over North Carolina, dropped two bombs - armed... but the didn't go off?)
I have considered finding an out of work machinist and having shift forks duplicated in titanium alloy. Besides, most fork bending (psychics notwithstanding) I have seen I suspect is shifting without the clutch. People ask me what it is like to ride my vf1000 - I like to tell them that it is like making love to Cynthia Rothrock(world karate champion) - a sweet ride until you do the wrong thing, then its traction or morgue time.
