I tried searching this but I couldn't find much, might just be me. Anyways, will 86 vf500f cams work on an 84 vf500f? I bought some on eBay the other day and just now noticed that they were off an 86

Nope. 86 are line bored heads and use totally different cams. Sorry.
    You need 84 or 85.
There are actually a lot of differences between 84/85 and 86 500s.

The guys at the Honda dealer told my mom that the cams were pitted some 15 years ago when she serviced it right before putting it in storage, and I decided to break it out of retirement

You could probably find something decent on CL for less money than you're gonna sink into that tired, old, neglected VF. :blue: If the original cams pitted the chances are high that replacements cams will too. And you'd be riding alot sooner. :witless:

Of course you've done some research and realize that VF500s have serious potential valve problems too, yeah ? :frown-new:

Well I honestly kinda like it, it was my moms first bike and it would be mine, plus it was the 10th one ever made with 19,000 easy miles

Fine. Let us know when you have it ready to ride and how much $$$ u spent, OK ?:sorrow:

Even with bad cams you should be able come up with compression readings which would give some indication of how much more u need to spend................if the needed parts are available new.

LOTS of hopeful but ridiculously romantic 500 resto projects run into insoluble parts problems. :frown-new: But we hope you have better luck ! :biggrin-new:
