I have a 2000 VFR800 that has what looks like a 6th gen wiring harness and ignition, but a 5th gen ECU (part # 38770-MBG-A01). The ignition has the 4 pin connector with a pink wire (the rest of the wires are the same as the 5th gen 3-pin connector), which is why I'm guessing it's a 6th gen. I bought a 5th gen lock set on ebay and it wasn't until I got it that I realized the ignition on the bike was different. I moved the 4-pin connector to the 5th gen ignition so I could connect it to the wiring harness on the bike, but when I turn the key the FI light doesn't turn off and I don't hear the fuel pump priming. The engine also doesn't turn over. I looked at the wires going into the ECU and there are a different number of wires than my 5th gen wiring diagram shows. I'll upload some pictures in the morning when it's light out, but does anyone know what happened to my bike? Will I be able to use the 5th gen ignition or should I just try to send the lock set back and buy a 6th gen ignition?

I wonder if this has anything to do with a HISS system? Maybe your ignition is waiting for a chipped key?

I think HISS was fitted in 2000 and onwards, so although it will be a 5th Gen bike, the HISS fitting probably means that it has had some other differences to the wiring loom. A pre-HISS loom probably won't work on a post-HISS bike is my thought.

I'm not sure what HISS is, but if it's a chipped key, US spec 5th gen VFR's don't have it. At least my 2001 has an ordinary key. I'll look at mine and see how many wires the switch has. There may be differences between 1998-99 and 2000-01 5th gen keys. The ECUs are different (O2 sensors, etc.) so the wiring diagram you have may not match your bike if it was printed before 2000.

H3nry is right, it's a US model so no HISS. I can get the bike to start if I use the switch from the 6th gen ignition with the lock barrel removed so I can turn it with a screw driver. I just checked with my multimeter and the pink wire on the ignition is connected to the ECU through the gray connector. I have a Clymer service manual for 1998-2000 bikes and it only has one wiring diagram. I'm going to post in the 6th gen forum and try to find out if the wires on the ECU connectors have been switched or if they are in the stock (6th gen) position. I might just figure out what the circuit in the 6th gen switch looks like and modify the 5th gen switch and forget about it. I still want to figure out what happened to this bike, though. All I know at this point is that I have a 5th gen bike, 5th gen ECU, 6th gen harness, and 6th gen ignition switch. Also, the tachometer and odometer don't work, I'm not sure about the speedometer since I haven't ridden it yet (one of the clip ons has a stripped hole so I can't tighten it) but the idiot lights work. At first I though someone found a cheap 6th gen harness and rewired it to work with a 5th gen ECU, but the number of wires going into the ECU doesn't match my 5th gen wiring diagram and the 5th gen ignition switch doesn't work on its own.

While I was uploading the pictures I got a call from the city... I bought this bike at a city auction and apparently they fucked something up and the sale is invalid. They're sending a tow truck on Thursday to pick it up. At least they're reimbursing me for everything I've spent including parts I bought on ebay. Maybe this is a good thing, the bike obviously has some problems. Unfortunately I'll probably never find out how that 5th gen bike and ecu was working with a 6th gen harness and ignition...
