I just bought a brand new 2010 VFR1200 DCT. I'm coming up on 500 miles and want to change the oils. This is my first new bike that I have put through break in so I want to treat it nice at the start being I tend to keep my bikes for a long time. Some people say use dino oil, others synthetic. What do you guys think? On my other bikes I have only used Castrol 20-50 dino. I'm open to all brands Also will be changing the differential oil.
. Just FYI I am keeping my 97 VFR with 105,000 miles. Still runs perfect!

Whoa ho, No doubt you'll be getting all sort of answers, But since you have a VFR750 you all ready I'd like to think anyway you know the answer, but, it's always good to ask, all though you may get some smart ass answers. ;) I use....

For short break in intervals Rotella 15w40 because its cheap and jaso-ma rated for bikes. I'm partial to motul 7100 for the recommended oci.

Read this blog and ypull have more info than you'll ever need in regards to what's the best oil...

    https://540ratblog.wordpress.com

Other than choosing a brand that fits the bikes specifications and changing it at decent intervals, really a buyers choice.

I run Shell Advance Ultra 4T ... it's a quality synthetic and I can get it for a reasonable price.

I hear it's hard to find in the USA though.

So far so good guys. ll brands I know and have considered! Some thoughts are to use dino oil for the first oil change then go to synthetic. Opinions?

Nawh ... just put synthetic in there and go ... no need to run dino oil first. That's a myth. I'm sure this will cause the thread to self-destruct, but this is my opinion.

Just don't think you can run the synthetic longer, I mean you can, but I don't look at synthetics that way. I look at them as a way to keep the engine cleaner and better lubricated - not as a way to extend my oil changes.

Ma2 rating is what your looking for, only Castrol rt has it, I don't like to change oil either, but these engine are so nice , I can't see putting cheap stuff in, may make only a small difference but the vfr is a very high tech engine, a master piece in 800cc, there isn't any thing in the world that matches its performance and engine life.

I ran Motul semi in my CBF1000 and changed over to Amsoil 10W30. Running a VFR800 now that sbd (aka some dumb bitch) KO'd my baby in a parking lot. Owners manual for VFR says use 10W30, I hear 10W40 is common; typical seasonal temp here 10 deg c to 30 deg C, its a toss up.....

    Joking btw.

I usually use Rotella due to this exhaustive study someone posted a long time ago. It basically said it was best bang for the buck. I have near 100000 miles on the VFR so I guess the oil is ok. The filter I try to use was recc from the same article I think but I fogot the name of it. Same reason, best bang for buck. It's a yellow filter if that helps at all. :)

I do wash the bike once a year just about, though.

I swear by a 55/63 mixture of used axle grease and fat-free gravy.
