Do I need to drain the oil before replacing the stator? Is the oil going to pour out when I take the over off or is there just a little in there?
    I have an 99 5th gen.

    Thanks

just a few drops of oil will come out, no need to drain.

I did my 6th gen about 2 months ago and it did drip some oil but not enough to make a difference in the sight window

Maybe a tablespoon of oil escaped onto the waiting drip tray

Spill the beans. Why are you pulling the stator cover?

Well, I've been having charging problems (discussed in another post) and was planning to pop the cover off and have a look-see. After replacing the battery and r/r the damn thing still wont charge. If fact after doing the "drill" and testing the hell our of everything I'm seeing a voltage DROP at the battery as the RPM goes up. At rest/off or running idle the voltage is at 12.6v....no charge. I'm seeing good voltage on the stator side at idle and 5k rpm. I'm thinking the stator is shot and can't overcome the r/r thus no charge and a drop in voltage at higher rpm as demand on the battery increases.

Just wanted to make sure I could pull the cover without doing an oil change to boot.

Pro tip, stator visual checks are worthless as they all look burnt after use, even if they are fine.

More importantly, what was the AC voltage to ground for the three different stator legs at idle and at 5000 rpms?
What was the resistance from leg to leg and leg to ground, with the engine warm and off?

Thanks for the tip. I need to check the AC volts to ground when running. Resistance is 0 to ground with engine off/cold. I can't remember resistance on each leg but I know all 3 where the same (cold).

    Rundown
    factory R/R
factory stator (wires soldered)= 57v at 5k rpm, 15v at idle
    12.7v at idle on battery
9 to 11v at 5k rpm on battery (voltage drop)

    Rick's R/R
factory stator (wires NOT soldered)= 57v at 5k rpm
    12.7v at idle on battery
12.7v at 5k rpm on battery (no voltage drop but no charging either)

The stator must be hot to test. Some shorts will not show when cold or out of bike.

Was that 57 volts AC for leg to leg?

    OK one more thing.

When running I have 6volts AC from each leg to ground of the stator. Is this right? Is the stator grounding out when running?
When off there is 0 resestance to ground on each leg.

I'm jonesing out here. I need to get my baby charging again. Im bored riding my GS500. Anybody know a good mechanic in the Gettysburg PA area that does work on then side?

You should have about 20vac at idle.
When off you should have infinity ohms from leg to ground (the opposite of zero ohms) and one ohm from leg to leg.

Yes I have 16vac from leg to leg. I have 6vac from each leg to ground on the frame. I don't think I should have voltage running when I touch a leg to ground.

Yes, there is voltage from leg to ground. At I believe a factor of square root of two.

i'd think the expected voltage at idle would be between 6-8 AC volts. Test only between yellow wire pairs, not to ground.

I went ahead and pulled the stator out. It has a dark glossy burnt looking section in it, but not crispy burnt.
    I'm going to replace it.
What really pisses me off is after handeling it my fingers smell like burnt oil 2 days later.
Mostly when I sniff my fingernails like after you sniff your fingers after handeling something else :playful:
