Not long after my last post I actually did try and use copper strips, but it still leaks. The stainless clamps overlap and don't provide 360* clamping force. I even added notches to the copper seals to create an overlap.

So right now it's still leaking and popping. It doesn't really bother me. I might try the silicone sleeves later on.

what about putting two or four slits into the exhaust so when you tighten the clamp it has room to "crush" down onto the manifold?

I have no interest in this subject anymore. I just ran across my old pictures and figured I'd do an update.

I think the oil is from a small leak I have on the right side engine cover. I bought a used engine that had fallen on it's right side and the cover got dented. I put a dab of silicone on the dent until I can get my old cover refinished and swapped into place.

The dirt is because I ride it! :) That spot is behind the side panel and hard to see/clean.

I used muffler tape to wrap around the midpipe after the collector on my 84VF. I put enough on to get a tight fit and then clamped my F1 cans as normal. I had to mess with the amount a bit to get it right but they are solid , non-leaking and removable. It is also cheap and easily available if it fails or wears out. Maybe this will work for you also.
