I believe it is 5, but the answer may be 2 as well.
Have you inspected the clutch yet, or are you just trying to get an estimate before diving in there?

No, I haven't inspected yet, and yes, exactly. The engine is very gravelly when the clutch is released, most easily felt in neutral. A noticeable increase in coarse vibration and even noise. I know some is normal.

My (second owner) '03 with 30k kms on has the gravely scrapey rattle noise at idle once engine temp is up around 110F. Pull in clutch and all is silent. Let it out and noise is back. Sometimes sounds like erratic CCT knocking sound too which I believe goes away too when clutch pulled in. Clutch basket? Worn CCTs? Both? At speed it's hard to tell if condition is there but def in neutral. Same prob(s) as yourself?

Unfortunately my 2006 has this exact problem. How serious of an issue is it? Right now it doesn't seem to affect anything but my annoyance level, but I feel it's not okay to let it keep on like this.

I recently swapped out the clutch friction plates and springs on my VTR1000 (identical setup to this), and while I was in there I also replaced the bearing and bushing 3 and 20. This has given a much improved clutch action (very smooth take up, it was a bit lurchy) and has quietened the clutch down a bit. Replacing the plates is easy and requires few tools, to do the bearing you need a clutch holder and big socket, and the willingness to drive the old bearing out and insert the new one. A two beer job if you have the tools though.

Hmm. Two beer job? Would I be able to get by with a double of whisky? I'm going to get to the bottom of this some how. Great info everyone...

Vibration and noise on a 5th gen sounds more like a trans input driveshaft bearing failing. Definitely not a CCT (no cam chain).
Worn clutch baskets will cause notchy clutch action or grabbiness. I've not heard of clutch wear creating balance issues or noise.
I would take the cover off and see if there is any up and down play of the clutch basket assembly; it could be the input shaft roller bearing or backside support ball bearing (assuming it's not a bushing).
Ball bearings notoriously will make a gravelly noise when they fail.
Don't mean to be a harbinger of bad news, but frankly I can't see how a worn clutch causes vibration or noise.

On my VTR (which uses a very similar design to the VFR) I replaced the roller bearing and bushing that supports the clutch outer on the gearbox input shaft. I did have a little bit of play in the clutch basket on this bearing, and replacing it has quietened the clutch down.
