That is quite the feat. I've tried, twice now, to do the Canada to Mexico Insanity Iron Butt (24 hrs) and have failed. It is hard riding. And there is more to it than just to throw a leg over the bike and ride. You have to plan for the time of day you will be going through different cities, how long will it take you to get to the next city, and the trade offs for choosing one city over the other. In my case we would be dealing with three cities. Seattle, Vancouver/Portland Or, and the LA area. Hit morning rush in Seattle, noon rush Portland but this allowed us to go through the LA area well after the evening rush which was our target. That required us to cross the Canada/US border at 01:00. But alas. We shut it down at Kettlemen City after 22 hours. I will try this one more time. This time alone. If I don't make it this time, then that will end that goal.

Some might say there is a fine line between determination and mental illness or obsession. But I am OK. I have two goals. To successfully complete this task, and to quite after the third failure. You don't always win. The good thing about the past two failures, I drowned my sorrows at the R3 BBQ in Atascadero afterwards.

Anyone remember the guy that shattered the Iron Butt one year on Yamaha R1? He was disqualified because they said he was reckless with how fast he was riding. Hitting 160 to 170 regularly. Nuts!

I really don't get the appeal of doing this to be honest. Riding a motorcycle should be an enjoyable experience, not torturing yourself. Why not make the iron butt challenge who can strain a stool the longest? Consume copious amounts of beef jerky and PF Chang's then sit on the blaster. Makes about as much sense IMO.

True enough. Its not for everyone. I don't watch boxing. I also don't like guns that are not of the hunting variety. I looked at mine as a tool of the trade I was in at the time. For me, this is a challenge only. Not a lot different than a runner, a high jumper or a weight lifter aiming to reacha goal.

LOL aside, you may be right there. But with age, there comes determination, and a lot of stubborness. But that may not be enough.

A lot of successful Himalaya climbers are older which one would think would be a young mans game. 40's and 50's is common. I think your onto something there.

It makes me think of a old Harley rider trying to do 1,000 mile ride- almost made it
then crashed in the last 50 miles off a exit ramp-brand new bike. He did ok in the crash and was wearing a helmet-not your average rider though. Your Brain says you can do it then your hands say -I don't work any more.

I have done a Saddle sore a 1000 miles in 18 hours on my 1991 ST1100 and don't think I will do another. Other than saying I did it I don't see the appeal. But with that said I know a lot of old guys 60 to 70 that will click off 8 to 900 miles in a day like it was nothing.

I will say that I was a really rookie doing it. No training no Idea what I was in for. Maybe now it might be easier I am 40 pounds lighter in much better physical shape and I click off about 20k a year. My big thing was that I was falling asleep while riding. But at that time I also did not get my sleep apnea in check, where now it is.

The guy did quite a feat. I admire his planning.

Yes. The association does look at your logs and they do promote safety. The normal Border to Border IB is 36 hours but they have an Insanity IB Border to Border that is 24 hours. Theoretically that can be done from Abbotsford BC Canada to TJ Mexico in 23 1/2 hours. But that is non stop riding and you have to make up the time for gas stops a bit. Stopping for meals will not happen. The 36 hour trip would be a breeze though.

I would use stimulants and what other drugs would keep me awake, but I would never ever wear a "condom catheter." :loco:

WOW !! I didn't guess that--at your age--you'd try something that strenuous and exhausting. I sure wouldn't, which means i'm trending toward wimpishness it seems.
