I'm planning a long trip this summer and am thinking about putting some sort of alarm/disabler on the bike (will probably be staying in hotels so not near the bike). Does anyone use an alarm on their bike? I've seen some with a handheld remote that let's you know if someone is tampering with your bike, and that sounds like the way to go. Anyone use one like this with any success?

I don't suspect that there a lot of thieves out there looking for 15 year old sport touring bikes, when there are plenty of new 1000RR's for the taking.

Yes, never assume against demented minds. Many thieves are opportunistic and would steal your dirty socks just to piss you off.

I've had a car stolen, cars broken into, and my bike knocked over. I would just like to know if something is about to happen to it so I can react if necessary. It's not really relevant that's it's 15 years old. What's relevant is that it's mine, it's mint, and I want to keep it that way.

you can park in the hotel room and take your rottweiler/sheppard/ridge-back with you on your journey, joking aside, do the thing with the hotel room and just use a disk lock and I think you would be good to go, short of parking in NYC, then you need a NYC chain/lock set-up. Bike covers work good too for keeping scum bags away from your scooter.

Sounds like a great place. I left my Enfield on the freeway once for 2 days when it broke down and I had to walk home about 2ks, it was insured and I left the keys in it hoping somebody would pinch it, when I finaly went to pick it up some bastard had pinched the keys, not the bike:crushed:

That's about what you need, I think maybe the best alarm might be a portable sensor with batterys- might not be nosy enough though. alarms tend to make the battery dead.

Audible alarms? Try fishing line and empty pop cans. An engine disabler? Just wire in a switch between the battery and ignition somewhere not obvious. They will run from the noise and won't bother searching for a reason the bike won't start. They will move on. Seriously. I don't see the need to spend a few hundred dollars when you can spend 20 and enjoy a couple pop or beer before hand.

It all depends where you go how safe the bike is.

I bring mine in the room. Easy to unload and wipe down.

The Xena brake disc locks have an audible alarm built in. It's pretty annoying, and very sensitive. Just bump the bike will set it off.

Thanks for reminding me that I wanted a lock for the bike. I just bought a XX6 off ebay. Bike has an audible alarm on it. Which works good. A second noise isn't bad to have plus mechanical lock. Never know where I'm staying when I'm on the road. Really hate to lose my ride a 1000 miles from home. That's a loooong walk back...................

I have traveled tens of thousands of miles across the US and only use the fork lock. I have stayed in cities, small towns, the middle of nowhere, camp grounds etc. Never an issue. I always take anything important off the bike for the night, GPS tank bag, maybe the top case and stuff from the side bags and the bikes are always in from of the motel room door or hotel front door. Now I will say I use common sense as to where I stay and East LA is not one of the places.

If someone want your bike they will do what it takes to get it. Most likely a truck or trailer. A couple of big guys can pick a bike up and put it in a truck in 30 seconds or less.

Although this topic brings up an issue I have been pondering. My wife and I bought a Kendon dual trailer this last fall and we have one trip planned already where we will use the trailer, and that is from Denver to Austin for MotoGP. So there are few questions here.

Do we lock the bikes to the trailer? And do we lock the trailer to the SUV when we are not around? The only place where I have concerns about any of the stuff is in Austin. The rest of the trip will be spent in the Texas Hill Country in small towns.

The accuracy of this statement cannot be understated. If they really want it, they are going to get it. Sometimes using violence. But that is not likely. And that brings me back to what I posted. Some may have thought I was saying this in jest, but two things a thief does not like, is visibility and noise. In the still of the night, those tumbling soda cans make a racket. Then again so will a motion alarm. But both accomplish the same goal.

I bought a rotor lock when I bought my bike. I take it with me when I go on trips. I have to admit, I very seldom use it. But I do have proper insurance to cover the cost of the loss if it gets stolen. As much as I hate insurance companies, I still buy insurance. I am not emotionally attached to my bike, my truck, my house or just about anything else I own. If I loose any of them, I am covered and go out to get a new one if that suits my purpose. That is not to say, I leave things around as easy targets of theft.

+1 A few hundred bucks a year for thousands of dollars returned if it disappears. Yep it is an inconvenience but it is better than nothing at all.
