Hello, I fear my cat is on its last leg, I know very sad, but it's life. Did the PAIR valve block off mod and now the cat is smelling like propane, i know wierd but i understand cats put off a smell like this when they are on their way out. So anyhow I was hoping to get tips on how to use my stock header by cutting open the converter to empty it. Will i leave the O2 sensors in place or remove and cap the bung etc. Any chance I can put the bike on a lift and do this without removing the header? I really don't need or want a new catless header looking forward to just using what I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Don't do it! The PAIR mod itself makes your exhaust smell like that (since it increases unburned hydrocarbon emissions). Gutting your exhaust will make it sound shitty and pollute more (the PAIR blockoff does the latter as well).

The o2 sensors are before the cat and unaffected by it, but the bike performs 10x better with out them. (of course while emitting slightly more hydro carbons, but arguably less NOx emmisions due to air/fuel ratio)
There is a chance that by doing away with the air injection system (pair valves) that your catalytic converter is no longer able to burn off all of the extra fuel.
But, I would think that there would be a dramatic reduction in power if the cat was clogged up.
As far as don't do it because of pollution, eh you are already doing the world a favor by commuting on a 40 mpg motorcycle instead of a 20 mpg, car so I personally would not feel bad, though that is up to your moral compass.
"Don't gut it because it will sound like shit", that is about the funniest thing I have read all day. Its a VFR not a civic, the 98/99's sound beautiful and they have no cat.

Hey thanks for the info. So you think the cat is in trouble with that stench it is producing? With the o2 sensors in front of the cat I shouldn't get error code or engine light when the cat is removed right? I don't need to do those o2 sensor simulator mods or should I for a better fuel mapping? I'm just trying to understand this stuff.

It is possible, I couldn't tell you for sure with out testing it out.
You will not get an error code or light for removing the cat.
You will need to either get o2 eliminators or 330 ohm resistors from radio shack, (same thing) to remove the o2 sensors.
Eliminating the o2 sensors, will not necessarily give you better fuel mapping (It will still use the same factory fuel map), but it will stop your bike from going in and out of open and closed fuel loop, which can be felt as surging, which is really annoying.

Just to clarify, I can go ahead and install o2 sensor simulator before I get around to removing the cat? I'd like to improve surging issues if this mod can help.

Yes you can definitely Install the o2 eliminators before gutting the cat.

My bad, I was thinking of people who had gutted their stock exhaust cans and complained that it sounded terrible.

I had my stock cans gutted and in my honest opinion, that is one of the best sounds in the world. I later got a two brothers slip on and then a two brothers full system and the regular old gutted cans sounded the best.
