I knew the CCT install went too easy...

So, I had a noise which I believe to be the CCTs acting up. It's been about 30k since they were replaced and the noise sounded the same as everyone has described, so I just assumed it was the CCTs. Now that I've replaced them and have re-verified my work as best as possible, my bike has a new noise (well, at least it sounds new as the sound previously was on the right and now it's on the left).

And here it is for your listening pleasure! It really kicks in at about 20 seconds:

    Any guesses?

Sounds like something is slapping erratically, hate to say it, but doesn't sound like timing chain is being properly tensioned.

It sure does sound like that doesn't it. I double checked the functionality of the CCTs before I put them in (unlocked them and then wound them back up for the install...OEM) and they appeared to be functioning correct. Could that mean the cam chain has seen better days?

    Figured it out!!

It had nothing to do with my recent CCT work. It was actually related to my recent stator work. Some how the four stator bolts came loose! One of them was just about to fall out and the other three were only finger tight. They won't fall out again...

I use a system of marking bolts that have been Loctited and re torqued with a permanent maker when re-assembling internal components
No marker on bolts no final assembly

I totally forgot the Loctite step... I am getting better at removing/reinstalling the stator though!! I'm so glad I stopped riding until I figured out what the noise was. It probably wouldn't have been good for the flywheel/stator if one of those bolts came all the way out.

GOOD CATCH! The same thing happened to me before. Did you catch it before it wore down the stator or bolts?

Your FSM states that those 4 bolts should be locktited in place. :numbness:

I unfortunately wasn't following the manual (I was going on memory from the youtube replacement video I watched). Lesson learned, print out and follow the manual (actually, I'll have a shop PC setup here in a couple of weeks)! As for the bolts, three of them were fine but one of them had a bit of...wear...on it. :) Replaced the bolt and all is now well. Before catching the issue, but after turning it on the last time, I did an oil change, so that was already done (got rid of those bolt metal flakes without even trying). Took it for a ride this morning and it sounds like its good old sewing machine self!

Thank you! While I wish I did it the correct way in the first place, the wrench time is making me more comfortable tearing it apart!
