Went on the toy run yesterday. It's quite a well organised thing with all the respective toy runs country wide taking place simultaneously, with bands and a big piss-up organised at the end venue (afraid to say this is SA, so yes most people do ride home after) Durban is one of the smaller centres so they normally get about 5-6000 bikes, but it was still great to be part of it and it's something I try not to miss. My daughters get turns to go with. The bike didn't really enjoy the congestion of the mass ride, so stopped a couple of times to let her cool off. Which brings me to a question (may as well save starting a new thread), what's the easiest way or checking if the fan works? Ever since I've had the bike the fan has never been needed, so whenever the temp gets to around half way (it normally sit at the bottom, common with the 4th gen I'm led to believe) I start to panic. Thanks

Looks like one a them harleydood daisy chains.. ;)

One of the better wrenches here may come up with a fancier way to check that fan operation. Maybe just let the bike idle and watch the temp guage. The fans are efficient and noisy.

as billy said - easiest way is to let the bike idle and get up to temp. when the gauge starts to get near half way, the fan should kick on. You'll hear it and see the temp gauge drop. Make sure you aren't low on coolant. If the gauge gets to 3/4 and you haven't noticed the fan kick on, I'd be concerned and shut down.

Otherwise, on the left hand side - clutch side - of the bike and radiator is where you'll find the fan motor switch. disconnect the electrical connector from the switch plugged into the radiator and jumper across the two wires. Ignition on and the fan should run.

culprits can be fuse G 10amp for fan motor
    fan switch on radiator
    fan motor
    obstructions
    wiring

Thanks guys. Checked it against the battery and in the wiring system so hopefully all will be ok.At least now I know what it sounds like! As I said there has never been any need for it to come on before. We lane split here so I can't see myself getting stuck in "traffic" like that again.

I love those toy runs, rich poseurs on $30,000 spotless FLXCHUTI bikes handing over a $10 Chinese toy to appease the poor, dreaming they did somethin good, then drinkin with their rich buddys till their trophy wife drags them home early.

I may hang out at one of those gigs in hope that someone will give me a transformer that turns into Raquel Welch when she was about 20.

Used to do the USMC Toy for Tots until the rules changed and the toys had to be new and in sealed boxes.

Last year I tried to join in at the very end before they were carolled into the park. NO Dice! The cops had road blocks up and all official, I even had a toy strapped to my gas tank.

Friend last year had the VP wrist band which got him to ride in the front of the prosession, when he got in, he was treated to prime rib and free beer. I needs one of those if I go on a run ; )

If it was a USMC Toys for Tots gig, hopefully the cooking was being done by the Navy.

Well I hope to go this year with dah wife on dah back of my honda. Its a pretty big toy run, it beat some love ride thing that they did in CA a few years ago. One year they had Edgar Winter playing up there. South Florida Marcum Park is where they end up.

Far as I know, no military was involved with the food.

Edgar Winter, that's pretty big, we just have some local bar band. Must be a bit crappy doing it in mid winter (didn't mean that, honest) though?
