So earlier yesterday I was headed to my brothers for our annual Bikes Blues and BBQ ride. 3 miles from his house my speedo and Tach went dead and then 30 seconds later bike died and I coasted to side of the road. Having already replaced the Regulator / Rectifier a few years back I immediately thought this might be the problem. After getting off the bike and shutting off the ignition I noticed a high pitch squeal and smell of sulfur. I removed the seat and opened the battery compartment to observe the battery venting gas and it was hot as hell. removed the battery and allowed it to cool a bit and replaced and tried to see if I had any power after 30 or so minutes... TOAST.. well I got a tow and by now its late so started immediately searching for a replacement Regulator rectifier. got one on the way that should arrive tomorrow morning early AM. In the mean time I purchased a new battery and also replaced both headlights as the low beams had burned out so I was running them on high beam all day yesterday. thinking that it was the Reg/Rec I installed the new battery and planned on checking volts and amps to confirm. checked battery before turning the key and have 12. 5 volts. turned the key and noticed no fuel pump. Motor does crank over and gauges and headlights work on both high and low but wouldnt start. pulled fuses and found the 20 amp Fl IGN, PUMP fuse blown. unhooked Reg/ Rec to see if maybe a short there but blew 2nd fuse Immediately upon key turn. so I've tried to look over wiring as best as I can but don't see any obvious wire shorts. So hopefully someone has had this experience before and may have a clue where to start looking. At this point Im not sure how far I want to tear apart the bike in my brothers garage as I have to go back to work soon and cant really tie up his garage.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated

    THANKS

Owww! So it sounds like you had a regulator failure in which the voltage went way high. At first the battery tried to hold the excess charge until it boiled, then the voltage went up until it burned out something else which killed the engine. Your fuse to the engine control unit and fuel pump is blowing. Not good. Either the fuel pump or the ECU is likely blown. Unplug them both and see if the fuse blows. If it does, then there is something else on that circuit which has shorted.

Plug in the ECU. If the fuse doesn't blow then the ECU may have survived. If the fuse blows, the ECU is toast.

PLug in the fuel pump. If the fuse blows, the pump is shorted. It's a matter of trying one thing at a time till you find what died.

Had the same kind of R/R failure on my VF750, but I was lucky. I heard the battery explode and shut off the engine before the ECU etc. died. The only thing I lost was my voltmeter which burned out, and it was rated for up to 36 volts.

    Good luck.

There is a manual for 5th gen listed at VFRD, don't remember the details, but search for it.

The ECU plugs are right at the ECU. There is a plug under the gas tank near the fuel pump.

A quick look at the wiring diagram shows there's a bunch of stuff on that fuse, fuel cut relay, engine stop relay, etc. All the safety shutoff stuff in addition to the ECU and fuel pump. With luck, it's one of those cheap parts.
