I can't think why making it shorter would matter; more important that it stops beating your neck while riding. You could heat the fresh cut end up to melt it a little and stop it fraying.

Why are you wanting to cut the strap? All helmets I have had, the loose end of the strap colds back after going through the D rngs and attaches back on itself with a dome fastener. No flapping aroind at all.

Yeah Randy, like Cadbury said, it flaps. It had a magnetic button but like the reviews said, it falls out right away.

Have you considered just having a 5mm press stud fitted ? Most alterations shops would do if for a few bucks. They can be stitched on or pressed through the tape, although that might be hard to do on the loop with the D rings through it. It's pretty easy to do, it's not load bearing and shouldn't weaken the tape. A short strap will tend to be prone to slippage in an off and could come undone, plus it will be fiddly to try and tighten up unless you leave some tail which may then be too short to tuck away.

So, would some of these fixes work on shoelaces too?
