I recently picked up a 96 Ninja 250 for my wife to learn to ride on. I've been giving it a mild overhaul before giving it to her and one of the things that I've noticed is that the sidestand switch is not functioning. You can drop it in gear while running and the engine stays running. From what I can tell, the switch is good. I've taken a multimeter across the wires and get continuity when the switch is pressed in (sidestand down) and stop getting continuity when the switch is out (sidestand up).

Other than knowing this about sidestand switches, I don't have anything else left to test. I really don't want to turn her loose on it without a functional sidestand switch as we all know what new riders do... we did it ourselves. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

NCB, I've read that but it didn't get me anywhere. I guess what NormK says with that post though make sense. Sounds like they might have bypassed it higher up on the wiring harness somewhere. I'll have to check into that and see what I can find, Thanks guys.

I wasn't clear on exactly what you meant by put it in gear and it stays running.....that document indicates that you can put in in gear, while it's running with the sidestand down, and the engine will remain running....just having the clutch pulled in, in gear, apparently will not kill the engine.....you have to let the clutch out before it will die....your explanation did not get to that level of detail.....that is why I didn't post a comment with the hyperlink.

Issue resolved, it was bypassed further up the wiring. I should have known better than to suspect the morons before me had done things right after everything else.

NCB, you're correct that I didn't provide enough detail. My bad and shame on me. I do find it odd that the bike doesn't kill itself when it is dropped in gear and only once the clutch is released.

It's for my wife. She's wanting to start riding and it is about the only thing we could find that she could touch the ground on. It's not been well taken care of but I'm working on fixing that.

New oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, front and rear brakes, brake fluid flush, valve adjustment, spark plugs, and headlight taken care of. I still need to do a carb sync and put the plastics back on with the $75 of new hardware that it was missing but after that it will be good to go. Belly pan is MIA and with as bad as the other plastics are and missing tabs, I don't think it will ever have one again.

I've been trying to talk her out of it for over a year but she wasn't having any of that. Let's just say that she's wrecked her car three times in the last year and a half and two of the three weren't pretty... All of which were her fault. Oh well, her life insurance is paid up so if it is what she wants then it is what she wants.

Aside from that I'd rather have a pair of tits on my back instead of none at all but I certainly can't win em all.

I heard that...hopefully you have term life insurance. ..it all comes down to you teaching her and of course hopefully she takes a course or two.
Good luck and of course pictures of her are a must, bike or no bike..no matter.

As mandated... but apparently the site wants to auto-rotate the image.

She's passed the MSF class and has her endorsement on her license already. She is stubborn when it comes to listening to me though but seems to accept it from others when they tell her the same shit. I'm a member of some local MC groups (non-hooligan groups, track day enthusiasts, etc) and hopefully she will keep listening to them tell her the things I've been saying over and over again. I just need to keep her out of urban areas to get some time under her belt. Hopefully that will help some.
