Ohlins rear shock standard settings

    My fifth gen has an ohlins rear shock installed by a previous owner. I am assuming it has a spring for a 80 plus kg rider plus pillion. The shock has remote hydraulic spring preload, and remote compression damping and the rebound clicker at the bottom.
    I have checked the ohlins site for a manual and understand the operation and how too. But it refers to factory setting from which you then go plus/minus five clicks on rebound and compression.
    But I don't know the factory settings from which to start. Grateful if anyone can assist. The rebound clicker has 60 steps and the compression clicker 10. I count six steps on the spring preload.
    I weigh 70kg but with all gear on boots and all probably 80kg. With my wife on board the shock performs perfectly for me as the rider and I can throw the bike around and it tracks like on rails.
    The problem is when I solo ride and then I find the ride can be harsh and going into dips I get bounced up and down which is uncomfortable.

    no help here but man wish i had your problem would love to have that shock. That said, I'd start by taking notes what you have, screw or twist to bottom, just make sure you count how many turns or clicks , then work from that.

    Thanks mate. I thought I got the bike right up till two days ago but yesterday I discovered I had been turning the rebound clicker the opposite way and what felt right was two stops from softest and I know that's just not correct. So stripped the rear fairing off because the compression clicker is hidden above the exhaust under the fairing on the right. I'm just a little guy and so it's hard to get leverage to bounce the bike properly but I tried and found that on the rebound at least I had been turning the clicker the wrong way. Any way I started small. With spring preload at 1, I got static sag at about 10 mm in the rear which is in the range ohlins manual says is acceptable. So I set the compression at the softest setting,1, and rebound 20 clicks from hardest. Went for a long ride with the boys today and got bounced around when at 110 kph over bumps and dips. Bike was still stable throug corners even at 100 kph but I was a little cautious. Did a click at a time and am getting it close to comfortable compromise between compliant on the bumpy roads here and firm enough to be stable and retain flickability. But it would be good to know what a possible starting point would be rather than me possibly damaging the shock by going outside the parameters. Cheers

    Mr Ohlin, he say:"12mm spring preload, 12 clicks on compression and 14 on rebound, counted from fully closed".

    Play away to your heart's content, you can't damage the shock UNLESS you try and screw the adjusters in further than just bottomed out.

    Yes, I live closer to where the Trans Pacific cable makes landfall than you, so we probably get a better signal or something....

    Of course I had to go adjust the settings accordingly and go for a quick ride .. What a difference. The chassis feels so much more in sync now and I just have to focus on where I'm going rather than anticipate any unexpected bouncing as I approach corners. Marvelous. Thanks muchly. Cheers

    What a happy outcome! I have recently chucked an Ohlins into the back of my VTR and there is a certain plush controlled Swedishness that is very nice. Glad its working for you too.
