93 VFR is completly dead, no lights, no crank, nothing

    HI I have a 93 VFR and yesterday when I was going to start it it just when click and nothing, I mean no lights, no sounds, no dashboard lights, no horn, turn signals, I put my battery in the tender and it said it was fully charge, my battery is maybe 2 to 3 years old and I replaced the R/R at the same time because the battery was not charging and it has ran well until yesterday, I check the fuses on the right side upper panel and they are all fine, I also checked the main fuse which is not blown, so now what should I check?? please help, thanks

    Check your earths, battery to frame, wiring to frame all need good contacts

    +1 on The Drill.

    My 3G did exactly the same thing a couple of days after a 400 mile ride. R/R was toast (see FSM for how to test), stator OK, battery OK after an external recharge.

    Rewired the charging circuit, installed an FH020AA, and don't plan to ever worry about it again. We shall see.

    Not so sure the drill is needed on this one at the moment, sounds more like loss of connection somewhere to go completely dead

    Check main fuse next to battery first.

    Check start/stop switch on bars next, just in case.

    Check battery connections next.

    Could be the switch as well.

    Finally, look for fried ground wires with OHM meter.

    Welcome to the Madhouse :welcome:- when you get time please drop by the introductions section and say hi to the rest of the folks on here. NB they really like photos on here so include a photo or two of your VFR in your intro.

    I tend to agree with Norm - if the battery is still fully charged - it sounds more like a stuck relay/starter problem.

    If it was a newer bike I would be suspicious of the start safety interlock cutting in - but I have no idea what, if any, safety kit went onto 93's - so this may be well wide of the mark, on a newer bike I would be checking kill switch, gear, clutch and kickstand sensors.

    For your bike you probably need to go back to basics and use your ears to locate where that "click" is coming from - you may need to get someone to operate the starter whilst you listen and hopefully locate the noise. Components on a 93 are getting on for a quarter century old - so it may be time for a new starter/relay - But harking back to my first car I found that sometimes a jammed starter can be jarred loose by a well placed tap or six ..

    I missed that part, so it isn't a match for my failure, which totally drained the battery, though it was fine when recharged.

    Thanks for the help, i am going outside right now to check the wires, ground contact and the r/r just be on the safe side even though i dont think that is the issue to me I am just not getting any power and all the fuses look good, anyway thanks for the help and i will keep you posted.

    So I checked the main fuse and the other fuses and they are good, I also check the R/R and it looks good and no fried wires, then I checked the battery to ground wire and is good, i WENT TO CHARGE my battery and in less than a minute my battery tender said fully charged! so now I guess I am going to check the kill switch but if the switch was not working shouldn't still get power to the instrument panel and lights and horn?, let me know what you guys think I am getting frustated and I am planning to take it to the shop but I was trying to safe a few bucks...

    Be sure to find, unplug, and inspect the plug between the key switch and the rest of the wiring harness. Any bad connection in there could account for your problem. You're correct in thinking that the kill switch would have nothing to do with this problem.

    did you use a dmm to check all power cables and ground cables and fuses? looking at them is not always the same as putting a meter on them

    I unfortunately don't have a dmm but I am trying to buy one and yes I did inspect all the wires visually and I took the time to unplug and plug them back the ones that I could and wipe them down, actually looking for the problem made me detail clean the inside of my bike like I have never done it before and now I can take it apart and put it back together I also found, trace, unplug and plug back in the key ignition wire to the main power strip located above the headlights behind the dashboard, I am thinking, Could the main ignition key switch gone bad? because when I turn the key nothing happens, it is like I never turn the key to the ON position, I know that if I replace that I will get a new key LOL, and perhaps my problem will be solve, my question is, How often do the cylinder ignition keys go bad? and is it very common?

    Get yourself a test light, the type with the spike probe so that you can start probing around to find where you have power, before you start thinking about replacing the switch
