Just want to take a moment and say howdy from east Texas to all on the forum! I'm 48 with 3 sons and have been wrenching and riding since I was a kid. Most of my adult life I have owned 80's yamaha's fj600,fz600,fz750, and currently have 2 FJ1200's My 21 year old son who has always been my helper now is about to get his first bike. He has found a used '86 vf500f. It is cheap as it has some issues and I'm actually looking forward to helping him. I have never worked on a vfour so wanted to join a V4 forum. I have had fantastic luck with the information and assistance I have received from the Alfa Romeo BB I belong to and hope to both extract help and give back here. I will take a moment to say thank you in advance and I will use the search function to try to find info first so I don't waste anyone's time with redundant questions. Paul
Oh I know of these things you call pics. We go to pic up the 500 tomorrow and bring it home to get sorted out. I will post some as soon as we get it home, he's only paying $500 . So having owned some 500 dollar bikes I do not hold my breath on its mechanical condition the pics he had texted me didn't look bad except for where the tank had been dropped while off the bike. He did say the 4 and 3 header pipes were cool while the bike was running but the guy rode it to meet him to look at it and rode it away. If I see something that completely scares me off we will keep looking but he seems to want to take on this project so I'll let him sink or swim. Here is a little yamaha and alfa porn while your'e waiting . I could not get the pics he texted to me of the vf off my phone, Will post tomorrow night. The cars an 87 the fj an 86
Nice. Mine's an '86 also, but I've got the front wheel off a '92 and the rear wheel conversion from a GSXR 750, so I can use modern 17" rubber.
My older fj is an 84 with a 92 1200 motor with wiseco pistons heavy duty valve springs fzr front end for 17 inch rubber AND a cbr rear rim for 17 inch rubber (honda content), kehein cr carbs dyna ignition and coils BUT the wiring harness is an '84 and I always seem to be chasing electrical gremlins. That was to be nico's bike but I just do not feel it is reliable enough for him to have off at college when I'm not there to help if it leaves him stranded. The 86 runs perfect and except for carb jetting and now a supertrap pipe off the 84 is my alternate daily rider with the alfa. I hope this 500 will be solid enough for him reliabiltywise as he will have it at school - he still has an explorer so it won't be his only ride but getting around campus is easier on a bike and much better on fuel costs.
neo, we will help make it solid for him. we are here for ya, a lot of talented people hang their hats here. just ask and yea shall receive the info ya need
I posted some pics and a lengthy synopsis of what I did to the new bike this weekend in the first gen forum. Keep in mind i also replaced 4 struts and rear brakes on one of my kids toyota avalon and brakes on my wifes yukon xl. I wanted to at least get it running and we did . I wanted to do more but I already get acused of favoriting my son that's into bikes as much as I am so I had other honey do's to do. I'm sure i'll need help and am not shy about asking!! Thanks in advance and for the warm welcome. Paul
