So im currently looking into purchasing my first street bike. I need something reliable being that I will be having roughly a 150mile commute 5 days per week. I stumbled on an 07' VFR800A with 19500 miles that has been well taken care of. The guy is asking $5900 which I feel is a bit high but I also think I can work him down to $5000. If I do purchase this bike what should I expect for major maintenance in the near future? I know these are known for being overbuilt and have a legacy of reliability. But being new to the bike game I figured I'd try and get some knowledge on the type.

    Any experience at all riding?
Bikes top heavy for us vertically challenged 5'6 but doable.
    Maintenance records.
    Any fluids changed?
    How old are the tires?
    How old is the battery?
Any mods, heli bars, pipes, PCV..ect?
Hows the chain look.....good maintenance ?
    Has it been down?
Inspect closely that all the fairings line up correctly, (first sign its been dropped).
If you have a experienced motorcyclist friend, a must to bring along.
Im sure I missed a few but this will help with your list.
    Good luck
One more thing, where do you live? Maybe someone on here will chimp in and possibly go with you to check the bike out....just a thought

    What ducc said.
These bikes are barely broken in at 20k. As for the major maintenance, if you are so inclined, you can get the valves checked if it hasn't been done. Me personally, I never checked mine on my 06 and I know many that have a lot more miles that haven't checked them either. It can be pricey if you decide to get em done. I wouldn't worry about it til at least 32k though, if at all. Other than that the normal things like tires, chain, etc, etc, etc, are to be expected with any bike purchase. Rarely do you buy a used bike that you don't have to do something to. Is it the RWB or the deep red color?

Thanks for the quick replies guys. The bike just had all fluids changed to include, engine oil, brake and clutch fluid. Color is deep red. It comes with a micron full titanium exhaust, throttlemeister cruise control, oem saddle bags paint matched. It was checked 3k miles ago for a valve adjustment and didn't need one. From the detailed pictures it doesn't look like it's ever been layed down and fairings look right. Doesn't say tire condition.

With the options listed and good care and condition, I'd say the asking price isn't that far off. Don't be too locked in on the $5000 price goal. Condition and age of tires may be helpful in negotiation.
