Hi, I juste bought an 02 VFR800 and after 20 miles on the highway, the bike started shutting down and restarting again. Then, it stopped for good, and 45 minutes later, it fired up again.

The issue is that when I turn on the key and put the killswitch to on, the Fi light doesn't light up and the starter doesn't respond, so I figured out it was some kind of killswitch issue, but could it be the killswitch itself or some sensor that could prevent the bike from firing up?

    Thanks for your reply,

I unbolted the gaz tank and I noticed that the grounding wire wasn't even bolted on to the frame, so I just bolted it and put the gas tank back into place, could this have been the issue? I know it is just the gaz tank's ground, but it may also ground the fuel pump, so I'm wondering if that could have been the issue

Of course I am! I'm from Quebec City (I know frenchies usually have a bad reputation, but some of us are pretty nice people ;) )

    Nice pun ;)

The bike fired up really fine and I went up to about 50 kph without having it shut down, so I hope for the best, but I'll try it on the highway this weekend.

Hey, I went on a 30 minutes ride on the highway yesterday, and I could not reproduce the issue, the bike didn't shut down at high speed. Although, it wasn't a complete highway ride, since we also went on some country roads.

I will have to try it again by reproducing the exact same conditions, which were about 30 minutes at a constant speed of 120kph

It may be a good idea to check all (earth-)connectors.
Especially the blue on the left site of the bike. Behind the fairing (you have to temove the left fairing).
I asume your VFR is VTEC ?

    Thanks for your reply :)

    Yes, my VFR is vtec

I have already taken off both side fairings and I disconnected, cleaned and reconnected all the visible connectors. Some of it were not so clean, so maybe this can have helped? I think I remember cleaning the blue connector on the left side of the bike.

    That should do the job......
Often the connectors are rusty or melted (to hot; in case of earlier stator/regulator failure).

That hasn't been proven, just suggested by the preponderance of evidence.

    Check your

    Resting voltage
Charging voltage (at 1000 and 5000 rpms)
    Main fuse holder
    Big blue connector
    Big Grey connector

My money is on the big blue connector, if not, then the main fuse holder.
Do it and then get back to me.

Also check the kickstand switch that stops the motor if the stand is down. If stand is sloppy might be activating the switch..
