Well, I always heard the saying that there are two types or riders, those who have gone down and those who are going to go down. Long story short, the math went like this: front fork seals leaking onto front brake rotors + 90 degree right hairpin = Motorcycle Lawn Darts. So my super clean 5th gen went from the pic in my avatar to this.

    P7160617.jpg
    P7160610.jpg

Left side of the bike is great.

So, anybody have some 5th gen parts lying around? I am in need of the following...

Rear bolt on subframe. Mine is bent.

Front cowl support frame. Again, mine is bent.

I would take a new headlight, but I might be able to make mine work.

Might take a new right hand side radiator, but again, I might be able to make mine work.

Gas tank. Even one with a few blemishes is okay, since it would be more cost effective to repair than mine.

I will likely do Nice Cycle for plastics and do a good documentation for everybody.

I know that I can ebay most of this stuff, but I trust the members of this site more than an ebay retailer that might not know 5th gen VFRs. As I mourn my mount the good news is that my gear did it's job (ATGATT) and I walked away literally without a scratch, and I just picked up a 3rd gen a few weeks ago, so I am not totally without a VFR.

Sorry, I did not know that would post sideways!

    Thanks.

Not good - but at least you walked away OK!

It goes without saying that you now need to take time to check yourself, your bike and your gear over - adrenaline can mask quite serious injuries for a while. So if you are not entirely sure - find time to arrange a check-up with your doctor.

As for the bike - I assume new fork seals will also be on the menu!

So depending on how many miles its done, and with the bike probably off the road for a while, this might be the ideal time to consider possible suspension upgrades. With that many forum posts, you will probably have come across Jamie Daugherty on VFRW (Daugherty sports) - who is probably a good person to advise on options which might help keep your VFR safely on the road!

As for the plastics. I really can't tell from the photos whether they can be salvaged by a competent workshop. Sadly most aftermarket plastics - especially stuff from China, are made from such poor quality flimsy material that you will really regret not attempting to repair or replace with original Honda stuff. There have been a few posts on here which show that decent plastic welding and a quality repaint can produce very acceptable results. Alternatively if funds are short, then a few feet of duct tape and a heap of racing stickers can cover up all manner of defects.

Let us know how you get on.

What a bummer! Bikes can be repaired, you on the other hand are okay.
I don't have any parts, but I can offer my help in scouring the local CL, picking up and sending you the parts.

    "Tis a scratch"

What are you going to do with the damaged bodywork and are you near Seattle?

Hey RobVG. Yes, I am near Seattle. What I will do with the damaged bodywork is to be determined. There is still good bodywork on it that survived unscathed.

Although I appreciate the help with the SF bay area craigslist ad Allyance, the distance may be a factor. If that VFR you listed were nearby, I could pick it up and make that my ride while I rebuild my other VFR.

And yes, Skidmad4x4, I am a first responder, so I did a self check on scene, 10 min after, and an hour after. Not a scratch. No after effects. Good gear helped!

Hey Randy, not likely, since I would have treated the VFR long before I checked to see if you had a pulse.

Sorry, maybe an inappropriate time to make a joke. Guess I miss my bike already. Not riding makes me fidgety...

it does pay to ride conservative ,though hard to do on a sporty vfr/ I go over every ride I do and look over if I made mistakes that should not be repeated, if there were none. I am happy, but if I did some stupid's things like all most crashing-I have to change.

Had just bought my bike but did not have it with me at the time. Was camping with the fifth wheel. Just the wife and I and a bolt of lightning.

You are right SOW, I also do post ride think-thoughs and review decisions I make on the bike. I passed, not seeing a corner coming up, and could have recovered if I had front brakes. Like most things, a couple of things went wrong, but it starts with me.

    Lesson learned,...the hard way.

I sometimes stop riding if I am making too many mistakes and do something else.

You know SOW, you do make a good point. There is a time when you know you should get off the bike. Been there.

If anyone knows of a 5th gen part out, or a cheap one I could use to scavenge for parts, let me know.

By the way, does anyone know if a 6th gen tank will fit a 5th gen?

Sorry about the mishap. I have a rear subframe and right radiator. LMK if you are interested. I have a parts thread in the same sub-forum

Do we really want to know what SOW does in his spare time? This is sort of a family oriented forum.

Great question on the tanks.. Manufacturers have been known to make small changes in nomenclature for the same parts, systems or subsystems.
