Agreed. They are stupid expensive. But I guess what makes them more is that they are built to withstand the weather elements and have a few other do-dads like Bluetooth to your helment coms, music memory and bluetooth phone capabilities and the like which pumps up the price. But to make it that high? I know quite a few who just use car GPS and wrap a sandwich baggie around it. Then again, if you don't ride in the rain, who gives a shit if it is weather resistant?

Your biggest issue getting a car GPS is getting a mount for that GPS to mount to your bike somewhere. Or you could use duct tape....not recommended.

I installed a simple ball mount to the two front tank bolts. I bought two bolts that were just slightly longer than the OEM bolts, to I'd still have the bolt-threats to secure the tank properly. I bought a RAM mount for the TomTom GPS and then installed a power cord for the GPS unit...I installed a fused cigarette plug under the seat and threaded a mini-USB charger up to the area of the RAM mount. I only plug that USB adapter in when I'm going to use the GPS unit, to avoid any shorts in the system.

As far as the audible directions from the GPS, I don't use them. But I do have a bluetooth unit on my helmet for music and figured if I ever did want to have the audible directions I'd just buy another GPS unit that had bluetooth.

When I'm not using the GPS unit, I just take the RAM mount off and all that's left is the ball, which is not really noticeable. That ball-mount can also be used for any RAM mount, such as a smart phone (which also has GPS and bluetooth).

And few years ago I bought a garmin 1450 for my bike and it fit perfectly in the ram waterproof medium wide box and I've never had a problem. I bought the waterproof box for a previous gps and I think I paid around $60 for it and I paid $125 for the gps

In a two step process, first take a couple of Midol then go here:

This is just what we need. SOW riding around staring at GPS & not paying attention to where he's going or what he's doing.

I am truly Amazed that you can get lost enough to need a GPS within the range of 1.5 gallons of fuel:biggrin-new:

Just buy a tank bag with a dedicated pocket for a GPS unit for mounting a car GPS on a bike

There are plenty of car GPS with bluetooth

We are fortunate that things are as they are with plenty of GPS units and only one SOW. (So far)

I use a Garmin 1300 in a RAM mount. I took an old bar weight and attached it to the RAM mount, then wrapped tape around it for a snug fit. It slides right into the stem. Then I wired a power adapter to power it off of the bike battery. Been working great for years, just not waterproof.

You are lucky, I got the 2006 model-the most sturdy of all the vfr so I can Bug you for many many years . I didn't really need your advice anyway, but I would ask anyway, I have used a tom tom on my old Yamaha -didn't work too well, but I have some more idea's now. I rode the black beast today-it seemed to be happy to go again. And I made a thousand dolor's in 2 days plus another $330. and I bought the helibatrs too in black with matching lowing pegs. And sent the troll BB a $420.50 bill for damage to my car and got a refund on the shocks on my car for $253,
so I did ok this week.

I installed sportbike bars on my vfr800 and put a $10 gps mount I got from amazon. Works perfect with my old Garmin 260w GPS.

I have yet to mount gps on bike-its on my list that may happen shortly as I went though all the wiring myself and now no how to fix stuff after a lot of trouble-blown fuse and tag light gave me big headache

I picked up a Garmin Nuvi 760 for $50 and a RAM mount for about $35. They work great, just have to watch for the rain. Motorcycle specific GPS's are way too expensive for my taste, when they really don't do anything better, except stand up to water.

What about being able to see the screen in bright sunlight ? I have a cheap xGody that would be useless on a mc unless I figure out a way to rig an effective sun shade.

Are the Garmins et. al. significantly better in this regard (or do u hafta pull over into some shade to see the map?)

I can't say about others, but I have Garmin units in my truck and wife's car as well. They are all the same as far as ability to see screen in the sun. Even the motorcycle specific Garmin Zumo at times may be difficult to read. But mine is mouinted so that I can easly adjust it's angle while on the go.

What is a "gps"? Part of the fun is getting lost.

Getting lost is usually fun, but not if you're actually trying to get someplace specific. I've traveled too many miles trying to find my way with paper maps in a map case on my tank bag. The GPS is a godsend.

Polarized film..Make sure you don't buy the stuff from China. Some shops that install window darkening film and vinyl graphics sometime stock the good stuff. They may just give you a chunk..
