So I was at the local dealer, was on my way home, I figured since I was selling my '99 gen 5, I,d have a peek at the Gen 8..

Low and behold the dealer had not 1, but 2 VFR1200 DCT's, a 2010 in black and a 2011 in red, both brand new.

Is around $11k CDN a good deal?

Not bad ... I've seen them selling for as low as $9K off the showroom floor. I think one of the local dealers here has one for that price right now.

Take it for a ride first. I haven't ridden one myself yet, but a few guys who have ridden them preferred their VFR800's over them.

Well I am looking for something a bit more powerful, and more touring capable.. I was actually quite smitten with the new R1200R..

R1200R is a bizarre contrast compared to the VFR1200.

Most of the guys I know that buy BMWs hate them after 30K or so when shit starts breaking. They are expensive to repair.

My wife's uncle has owned a LOT of motorcycles. He used to be heavy into BMW but got sick of repair costs and hassles as they got older.

I decided that when I replace my VFR, I will keep an open mind and not restrict myself to 1 vendor. I am also taking my time, will purchase new bike in the spring.

    My short list so far:

    R1200R
    S1000R
    Speed Triple R
    FZ-09
    VFR1200
    Super Duke 1290
    Tuono V4R
    Monster 1200S

I understand not limiting yourself to a single manufacturer - just that the VFR and R1200R are extremely different.

Speed Triple R is very nice.

If you're thinking of touring, toss the FZ-09 out and look at the FJ-09 instead, same chassis, same (awesome) engine, better touring ergos.

I was back at dealer, the actual prices were 10,900 for the 2010 in black and 11,500 for the red 2011..

if my evil plan works, I'll go back in the spring, I am sure they won't sell, they are considered "dangerous motorcycles", so here in Quebec you pay double for the plate.. $1100 a year.

That bike is a steal for around 10k.. 4k less than the new 800!

+1 for this. One of the guys I work with just bought a brand new FJ-09. Since they didn't have an FJ in stock when he went to look at the bike the dealer said "Well take the FZ for a spin and see if you like the engine and power delivery and such." When he brought it back to the dealer his comments were that the FZ was not very comfortable as a touring machine (and indeed that was not its designed purpose, but he loved the engine and how smooth and powerful it was for a triple). He bought the FJ sight unseen and when his bike arrived he brought it by the shop so we could all drool over it and after taking the bike for a ride he was very impressed. I had the chance to take it for a ride a couple weeks ago and it was very comfortable and seemed to evenly match if not better the Viffer on power and was very smooth. As Ian mentions the ergo's are definitely better than the VFR800 as far as touring goes, and it was very inexpensive.
