I have a long winded question. Bike: 2000 with 52,000 miles. Problem has existed since I got bike at 38,000. Rider: 100,000 mile rider that hits all the meat on the tire. (Well, maybe once or twice anyways). Problem: When the bike gets good and hot, the clutch grabs. This had multiple manifestations. 1) At a stop light, front tire lifts on clutch release, or, if I pulled back on the lever quickly enough, I gun the motor after a lurch. Cars on both sides roll their eyes. 2) Alternate sequence: I would kill the engine and feel like a dork. Cars on both sides ROFL. Ideas that did not work: 1) Changing to synthetic. Ideas that did work (one of the following fixed the problem, the trouble is I don't know which one): 1) Cleaned the clutch slave with light sand paper. It was slightly corroded. 2) Cleaned the clutch rod with light sand paper. It was slightly corroded, sludged and had a ridge built up. 3) Changed the plates to Barnett and springs to stock Honda. The old plates seemed to have plenty of meat on them. 3a) I then noticed one spring pillar on the basket was scored by a spring and tried to smooth it out with sand paper. Not much luck there, but the local dealer says it happens all the time and don't worry about it. But see next: 3b) Then I noticed the old stock metal plates did not wear evenly, but I dont see noticeable warpage. I did not mic out the fiber plates, that is next because: 3c) I last noticed 1 old spring was a little shorter than the rest. (All were shorter than the new ones). I did not notice the basket scoring until the plates were off, so I dont know where the short spring came from. If this was caused by the scoring (or vice versa) then I need to change the basket or ruin another set of plates. Maybe I could just turn them 180 and get more life out of them, I dont know. So I know what fixes it, I just dont know what fixed it, so I dont know if this is a temporary fix. I have suspicions that the scored basket pillar will just ruin another set of plates, but I dont know. Has anyone seen this before?
I have a full set of Barnett metal plates & 10% stronger springs I ended up not using this past winter when I rebuilt my clutch. You're welcome to them for the cost of shipping if you need them.
Hey thanks, can I take a rain check on the plates? Let me see what happens next first. I imagine I am good for another 30-40 K right now. BTW I dont use Barnett springs anymore because they ARE 10% stiffer. You would think my fingers would get stronger like that grip exercise thing, but they dont, they just get tired .
