No doubt! Thursday on my way to San Diego I spotted and called out to at least 4 mobile phone users (texting) to hang up their phones and drive, by using hand signals. One girl just smiled, giggled and kept on texting! I couldn't believe it. It's insane how many people still talk on their phones without a hands free device and even more so the number who are texting! If I could be paid just to pull people over and get part of the revenue generated by the fine, I'd be pretty well off I think.

I forget how much the fine is here but I think it is about $400 plus probably 4 points off your licence

I support this 100%. I wish they had this in LA. I have a 12 minute commute to work and see texting/ttalking about 4 or 5 times BOTH ways. The fine is only $165 for the first offense but I think it should be $350 for the first offense and DOUBLE every time after that. Keep me alive

45 minute ride each way to work, minimally I see at least 12 to 18 a day. They DEFINITELY should do this here in LALA land. Its oot of control and just getting worse. Pulled up to a light a few days ago and split to the front, looked to my right and this young chicky was texting, before the light changed I smacked her window with my flat hand, I'm sure she needed a change....just freekin clueless.
    Love that youtube Arnz

I always hear on the news "We need tougher laws and stricter penalties". What we have is more than enough. What we don't have is enough enforcement for what ever reason. Probably because the public is demanding police focus more of their time and effort catching real criminals.

According to the most recent data available from Statistics Canada, there was SUBSTANTIALLY more deaths is Canada as a result of traffic collisions than any crime, including OD from drugs and gang related activity.

Get a couple $175.00 tickets every year for a couple years and soon you will stop using your cell when driving.

In Cali. you can use a mobile phone, but it must have a hands free kit or capability. So if you use a Bluetooth headset or hands free kit you are in compliance.

The law also says that texting while driving is a ticket, but hands free texting functions are legal. It all seems to focus around not holding the device. So if you have a car app running on your phone and it can either read you incoming texts or it can send voice texts you are good to go.

Great vid. Here in UK the law is 3 points on your licence and £60 ($92) fine. 12 points on your licence and lose it. There's talk of doubling that.
STILL people txt especially women drivers at traffic lights. I've seen people txting whilst passing them at 90 on our motorways. Personally i think it should be an instant 1 month ban.

SOS anywhere you go. One sure cure is a little time in a slammer rather than a fine.

When talking and texting was just getting a foothold (hands free?) I suggested to the then State of Washington Chairman of the DOT an engineer and harleydood that a device could be developed like a light somewhere on any vehicle that was on and visable when any mobile communications device was in use.. That went over like a fart in church.

Back to the thrilling days of yesteryear one mo time deja vu and a few of the peanut gallery jumping my shit because I called Ms Chica not so smart for texting at the ton.

Me bottom line on this and I am stickin to my story is most of this will become the enforced law of the land here in the US when some movie star or politician either offs somebody or gets offed and a cell device is the cause.

More laws? How bout a new set for Colorado, Washington, Oregon and soon California and Texas? "TWS" (texting while stoned)

Anybody recognize the bike the cop is riding?

Closest call I've had in the last year was due to this. Was in traffic in Eugene, OR and this woman in an SUV changed into my lane. I almost had to go up onto the curb, which would have resulted in a minor crash considering the angle. When I got up alongside her about 10 seconds later she was babbling on her phone, utterly oblivious to the fact that she had just lane changed without even pretending to check (I was RIGHT next to her - NOT in the blind spot). I managed to get her to roll her window down and read her the godamn riot act.

I'm a big fan of zero tolerance traffic laws. Get caught using your phone while driving? One year suspension. Want a second chance? Great - you can have it in one year. This is life and death, not some trivial legal matter.

And it's only going to get worse with manufacturers installing Twitter, Facebook, Yelp etc in cars. Bastards are doing this consciously just to sell cars, other drivers beware. I can't F'ing believe it's legal.

On our military bases it's no phone use, the few times I have been on them I was clueless at first to see people pull over only to find out afterwards they were talking on cell phones.

I saw a program on Nat Geo or History channel about German auto makers and they were flabbergasted that Americans wanted cup holders in their cars, their response was (paraphrasing) "Why?! You should be driving your car, not drinking in it!".

People do some stupid stuff behind the wheel. I saw once on PCH a lady eating soup! Another, getting on the freeway eating a bowl of cereal and yet another clown eating chow mien from a to-go container!

How many points are you allowed? Here in CA, this is the rule behind a 4 point count...If you get 4 points in 12 months, you will lose your driver license. A violation received in a commercial vehicle carries one and one-half times the point count normally assessed.

It gets worse than that when passengers are involved.

Was headed South one fine morning in Seattle. The cage in front of me was weaving and way under the normal rate for that time of day and the traffic load. I thought at first the driver may be under the influence.. Nope, talking on a cellphone. So was the passenger.. Do not ask me for a further explanation.. Not a clue..

The main offenders here are the lobbys who are "selling" phones and phone service. Much of the rest is collateral and that cagers just do not give a shit most of the time. All manner of BS arguments are even provided by lawyers for fodder to users , many of whom regard cellphones and texting a First Amendment right. A couple of trips to traffic court is a real eye opener.

I had a copy of a white paper paid for by AT&T written by a university "proving" that talking on a cell while operating a vehicle was "safe" . Got it from a bud who is a racer and avionics engineer for Boeing.. Very solid dude.. Lost the damn thing in a hard drive crash.. Very telling about the politics that are in play.. and were in play in the Kingdom of Bush..

SOS as the gun lobby that stumps for stuff like using Gatling Guns to hunt rabbits.
