Ok bear with me here,,85 vfr500 sat in garage for 7 years,,took tank off and fuel petcock,,didnt know what to expect when i took apart,,what the hell is this diagram for right? put back together and figured out fuel wont flow without vacume line hooked up.Put fresh gas in and bike fired right up,,,stop at gas station and added more fule, switch from reserve to on,,5 minutes later on freeway she dies,,switch back to reserve and she started up again,,how can that be ,,did i install backwards ,,,petcock can only go on one way,,,rode for a couple hours no proplems,,,days later time for a another ride ,,fill with gas ,switch from reserve to on,,almost the same place bike begins to sputter and stalls,,cant start this time,, took off tank and vac line was hooked up,,finally get running by adding gas down carb,,,back on freeway and it happens again,,5-10 minutes later it starts running out of gas. Finally got bike home and it it starts up,,is it the diagram, or fuel pump,,its like the chicken and the egg,,i can see while trying to start there is no fuel going through filter but i can feel the pump surging,,is there a way to disable that diagram,,i thought of cutting a hole in it so fuel can always run.

    any thoughts
    Thanks
    Bill

If the 500's tank is like the 750's, there are two tubes inside the tank, one for main supply and one for reserve. Someone posted a picture of an tank that had been opened up. I think your main tube may be clogged, but your reserve is OK.

Tank may not be venting properly or at all. Next time it dies, open the gas cap to see if it restores the flow.

I was thinking along the same lines since it happened twice after fueling up,,but after the first time i switched from on to reserve and rode for a couple hours,,the second stall was a bear to restart,,i had to dump some gas down the carbs,,, started for home and same thing 10 minutes later,,this time i could not restart bike,,but when i got the bike home an hour or so later it fired up,,whatever it is appears to be intermittent ,,,aaaggghhh,,
    thanks

Check and see if you have a fuel pump. From what I have been reading that some people took the fuel pump out of the 85's and ran them without one. I read that once you do that its best to run the bike constantly in the reserve position. The reserve position adds as much pull as possible to get gas to the carbs. As you get low in fuel though, the weight of the fuel won't get to carbs as easy. So best to keep plenty of fuel in the tank. haven't don't this myself, but from what I have read that how it works
