Worked on the '83 today, buffed and polished my stator cover, cleaned off old and grease off engine and frame with simple green, removed fox shock to remove rear exhaust pipes for wire brushing and hi-temp painting.

Tightened up the shifter lever bolt. it actually came loose. Not loose enough to fall off, but enough to give a fair bit of play. Maybe the culprit behind missed shifts/coming out of gear. I may have thought it was fully engaged, but it wasn't.

Check yours. 1/4 ratchet, 10mm socket.

Actually, a cigarette burns too cool to be an ignition source. It won't even light gasoline which is much more volatile....

I have used lighter fluid for a very long time with great results. By the way you can put a cigarette out by dropping it into gas, won't blow up or ignite like in the movies. If your worried about combustible sources worry more when your using carb or brake cleaner.

Installed Delkevic 8" cans on my '07. Didn't have anywhere near as much trouble getting the factory luggage racks on and off as I'd been led to believe, and the rear bodywork comes off very easily to boot. Took some fiddling to get the cans fitting right, you have to replace the whole exhaust system from the cat on back, and there are four separate pieces that make alignment a bit of a PITA. One of the cans is turned slightly more than the other, but I hardly notice it. There's 1/2-3/4" clearance between the racks and the cans, and a little more empty space under the bodywork, but it looks fine. The upshot is that the bike sounds FANTASTIC now, just like an RC213V when it's revved up. Tried to take a video on my phone, but the mic clipped so badly that it sounds like someone gargling water and nothing like normal.

Also ended up making a poor man's fender eliminator when I accidentally broke one of the stock fender mounting tabs trying to loosen the screws; one of the ones with the square nut assemblies on it tore right off, so I ended up just tossing the whole fender and bolting the license plate and light assembly to the fender mounting bracket. It actually mounted up perfectly, and didn't cause any problems with the luggage racks either.
