I wanna upgrade the fr/rr suspension on my '06. Shock and fork mods. Any suggestions? I'm thinking Gold Valves/springs in forks and Ohlins 3way or Hyperpro rear....

A lot different bike, but I have a hyperpro rear on my '84. Awesome, and I'm sure one for your '06 would be great too. Unfortunately my cams have recently died, so the shock is for sale if anyone is interested... ~1200 miles on it.

I went with a Traxxion Dynamics upgrade and a Penske 8981 shock in the rear. No complaints - it worked out fantastic!

I went with the Gold kit up front, and had the original shock rebuilt by Race Tech on the back. Eibach springs all around (forks and rear shock).

Cost $1002.xx, made a really surprisingly big difference. Of course they set it up for me too; there would have been an improvement from having pro race tuners set the bike up even with the stock componenents.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, Race Tech is around the corner from both of us. I'm in Eagle Rock and I think you're right next door. Race Tech is in Covina.

If you call them, ask for this guy Tony. He worked on my bike and he really knows VFRs.

Sounds like a killer set up. Now, how much are kidneys going for these days? I mean you only need one, right?

No your right. By the time I add up the suspension ($1000), 1999 headers and staintunes ($1000), stainless steel brake lines ($500 installed), power commander ($300 w custom map), and the cost of the bike I'm pretty deep into Ducati territory.
But I got ABS and Honda reliability. That's worth a lot!

Ya you might have a point on the kidneys but there is a another approach you could go for dialysis two or three times a week.
I have done a lot of suspension up grades to one of my bikes and I don’t like to ride it very far or ... maybe im just getting old,
or maybe both. truly its up the the rider and would depend on what you wanted to use the bike for ?
but i am glad to have another bike to ride

The suspension upgrade for me made me quit thinking so much about the 1098, I have Race Tech gold valves with .95 springs on the front and a Penske on the rear :thumb:

My unintentional suspension upgrade is being brought about by my dislike of the linked brakes on my '02.

The parts in the garage at the moment include:

'05 RC51 forks, front wheel and calipers
    '04 RC51 triple clamps
    ?? CBR929 triple clamps
    '02 CBR600 front master cylinder
    tapered roller steering head bearings
Convertibars to fit the RC51 forks
    Penske 3 way adjustable shock
    '89 NT 650 rear caliper
    ?? CBR rear master cylinder

My plan of attack is to ride the bike "as is" through this season and then do the de-link upgrade over the winter.
I may end up fabricating a set of triple clamps from billet as I don't want to increase the trail by using the RC51 or CBR929 triple clamps, both of which have less offset than the stock VFR bits.

    Hi Rex,
Sounds like a pretty cool attack on your ride. I'm interested in how things work out.
BTW - Check out my delink story for tips on the brakes and for your work on the rear.

    mello,

I've read your de-link post as well as everything else that I could find that was relative on this site, VFRD and elsewhere.

The one thing I just can't get a grip on is the use of the stock rear caliper. I honestly don't see any good reason to use the 3 piston lump and go through making a jumper line to "activate" the third piston. Why not just use the stock unit in 2 piston form?

Part of my plan is to reduce overall weight, without getting manic about it, which is what lead me to the NT650 rear caliper.

Where did you get the gold paint you used on your rear caliper? The NT caliper is a boring gray, and the gold looks like a good match to the RC51 fronts I already have.

Admittedly I didnt run the calculations for the 2 piston rear, my guess is the 1/2 inch master cylinder may have worked out. I used all three pistons mostly not to have a dead piston in the middle and possibly lock up someplace you dont want it - maybe more drag. I looked at other Honda rear calipers, even bought an RC51 and a F4. They turned out opposite hand of what I needed. I didnt look at a NT650 maybe that would have worked out. Mostly I went the way I did in the interest of not having to fab anything and my calculator told me it was a good match for the bike. It was a fairly ez way to go. Maybe if you get the NT650 to work out (did you say "weight savings"? - I'll take a 2nd look.

Gold paint? Rattle can at Auto Zone. I actually painted both the front and the rear. The mask tape job was a bitch. Dont get brake fluid on it - it eats it right off. I had to paint the rear a 2nd time.

Best of luck with your mods,

    MD

I've been riding on Hyperpro springs for 4 years now, love 'em. This past winter I sprung (!) for a complete Hyperpro shock and spring and passed the stock shock with the Hyperpro spring onto another VFR friend. UNbelieveable!! I wouldn't ride on the street with anything but a progessive spring F&R. FYI: Hyperpro shocks are built by Wilbers, only the progressive spring is Hyperpro's. The front is stock damping with 20W Maxima Fork Oil - I dislike BelRay ALOT. Maxima is much better fluid IMO.
