I'm told by a Honda dealer that the 16000 mile service for my 2008 VFR will be around $1,200. The service includes a valve adjustment and flushing all fluids. The cost seems high. Is it reasonable?

The VTEC valve check by itself is about $600 - $700 and is a complete waste of money in my opinion. I have several friends who have worked as mechanics at Honda dealerships for many years and they all say it is a very rare occurrence that the valves on the VFR are out of spec at that low mileage. Also quite of few members have NEVER done the valve check ever and have ridden their bikes well over 70k miles without any issues. I say save the money and wait until at least double or triple that mileage before doing the valve check. In the rare event that something catastrophic happen to your motor you can always buy and install a used replacement motor for not much more than it would cost you just to check the valves. As for the flushing of the fluids it sounds like you are getting bent over backward and screwed by the dealer. Labor for flushing all fluids shouldn't be more than a couple of hours and is definitely not worth the approximate $500 they would be charging you. It really isn't difficult to do yourself if you have a service manual plus there are plenty of knowledgeable and helpful forum members that would be more than willing to help guide you through it if you want to tackle the fluids on your own. If you don't feel comfortable attempting it on your own you can start a thread asking for help and I'm sure someone would be willing to hook up with you to help in return for a nice dinner and/or beverages. If you lived near me I would help you and it would only cost you two six packs of Lagunitas Lil' Sumpin Ale.

Thanks for the advice. Lagunitas Lil' Sumpin Ale must be good stuff. I haven't seen it in CT.

I agree with Rollin. If you search the forum, you will see that just about everyone who has had the valve check done at 16K, the result was that they were in spec. Personally, I plan to get it done at 32K and even then, the odds are that they will be OK.

As far as the fluids go, if you can ride this bike, then you can learn how to change the fluids. It is not hard at all. Put your money into the service manual and read the step-by-step sections for doing so. There are plenty of people here to help you if you need it.

Wow I'm glad I don't live out there. Valve check here is $200, and if need adjustment another $200.

Ummmmmm wow!!!!!!! Speechless! Are you having the frame gold plated? Diamond studded tires installed? Or just getting a good old fashioned screwing? Must be a great technician they have to be charging 300 per hour.

Unless the shop rates where you are are 30 bucks an hour, there's no way they would do a VFR VTEC valve inspection for $200.
