    86 vfr.jpg 86vfr2.jpg 86vfr3.jpg 86vfr4.jpg 86vfr5.jpg 86vfr6.jpg 86vfr7.jpg Hey guys,
I just got my first 2 Interceptors (both '86's) within the last month, the first one I found on craigslist and got it for $400, it runs but has been thrashed on in every way possible, the second I found on ebay for $500 and I'm goin to go get it this weekend, it's in much better shape, but hasn't been started for a couple years.

What advice can I get on pre start-up prep for the new engine?

I found Toecutter's carb cleaning tutorial and I plan on following that, but what are some other things I should look for and check out before firing her up?

I will post some pics when I get back home.

    Thanks

After you post up some pictures  change all the fluids , check valve specs and sync carbs, all the basic stuff and then fire it off and see what you got. Tires, chain and sprockets go withoot saying but I just did.

The bike with the Rothmans paint scheme is my ebay find, Pics of the thrasher to come soon.

I have new tires, battery, chain & sprockets, Athena full gasket kit, and a few other parts I needed to fix up the thrasher (speedo cable, brake lever, seat cover, throttle cable, side covers) before I found the other bike, which in my head she was just named "the good girl", so I might change the title of this thread to Thrasher and The Good Girl.

And this is Thrasher, not much to look at yet, but she runs pretty good, all things considered. And she has a title. Well worth $400.00. Will she ever get back her 'Merican colored glory days? Nope. I will keep my eyes open for a pristine 2nd gen, but Thrasher is gonna be a road warrior, the vision I get looks like a cross between a bike from Mad Max and one that the rovers rode in The Book of Eli....yeah

A compression test would be useful if you want to learn more about what the bike might need in future......or not ?

The Trasher might be fixed by a few parts replacements; and bond or other replacement title can be found in many states if papers are clear. So please keep it roadworthy, not hacked to bits for profit and condemned to die. Shooting the last of the few elephants like.

Please move the bike asap, as that is the WORST looking place for a bike to sit we've ever seen here by far !!

    :ghost:

THE BLUE ONE is a rare prize and looks great; but total repaints almost always indicate a crash as the cause-- large, with lasting damages;or minor, just to cover scuffs and scratches--so u need to determine which. i imagine i see a slight leftward deflection of the tail subframe, common crash damage that can be fixed (by a pro) but wasn't on the blue bike. Check the tail angle and placement vs. rear tire centerline. Maybe it's just my glasses ?

The Yosh looks fine but sounds a little too loud at all speeds, imo.

No, squirrelman, not like that at all!
She will be beautiful in her own right, and mechanically top-notch. It's the Good Girl who will shine as new, I'm bringing her in from Minnesota with no title, the guy I'm gettin it from did'nt get a title when he got her, and from what I can gather from Michigans DMV website is that the only way to get a title for a bike with no title is to either have the previous owner come in with you and provide history of ownership AND the bike must be in the states database....but, I haven't explored all avenues yet-what if I were to assemble it from scrounged up components? or something, where there's a will there's a way.

I just told my wife that I was getting the Good Girl for parts, I really have no intentions of tearing her down, I just want to head off the need to try and rationalize why I need two of the same bike.

Thanks for the advice, I will do a comp test, also plan on doing a thermal scan on the pipes near the heads, I see that twist in the tail too.

And don't fret, the garage will be finished soon

Haven't had time to do anything with my bike, the only update I have is that the Good Girl's subframe is completely straight and square, the reason for the kitty wompassness in the pic of her rear is due to the right side wheel spacer pilferment, along with the caliper bracket and caliper mount torque link. But it's all good, Thrasher has that. One other note, Chaparral motorsports has free shipping on most everything including tires

Nice score on the bikes - that's a lot of machinery for less than $1K. Wish mine had been that good of a deal! Is that a Fox twin clicker under there? And what rear end got grafted onto Thrasher?

I heard Vermont can be very helpful with old bike titles.

Nice finds. I would think you could just apply for a new title and have an officer run the VIN to see if it comes up clean. Thats what we do for lost title here in Iowa.
Have fun with them, the old ones sure are nice!

I like that paint scheme on the Rothman's. I think my first VFR will go with that kit when I get the new tire on. Cleaning the carbs and valve adjustment will be a good starting point along with replacement of the usual wearables (tires, chains, sprockets). Good luck with the work.

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOk!

Beena long time since I've been here, many things have taken place in the past year, I rode one of the bikes for the later half of the summer and was actually able to take er for a ride just last Saturday, a Jan 30 ride in Michigan is a great thing! Thank you global warming  !!

I wanted to get one last ride in with the stock engine, I dropped it (the engine) off at the machine shop yesterday.

I see that in the service manual there is a different set of cams in the California models compared to the 49 state from 1990 on.....but for the '86 there is only one set of measurements, is this accurate? Did the change in cams between the emissions model and non happen in 90?

Sorry or the monumentally late response desktop...

That is a clicker under there, I'm going to be sending it out to Dougherty Motorsports for a good once over here soon, maybe I'll get lucky and have enough time this weekend to get it pulled off. And I don't know what that fender started out on....
