Damn, I really wanted them to make it. I'm so bummed, I really want one of their bikes. I wish I could buy one just to get it as a collector item.

Erik Buell Racing, an East Troy motorcycle manufacturer previously owned by Harley-Davidson Inc., has ceased operations.

The company, with 126 employees, also is filing for court protection from creditors, Buell said Wednesday.

Erik Buell Racing is the sequel to Buell Motorcycle Co., which was owned by Harley-Davidson Inc. for more than a decade before Harley dropped the brand in 2009.

Initially, the new company produced hand-built $40,000 sport bikes for road-racing enthusiasts. More recently, it geared up to build a mass-production motorcycle that sells for about $19,000 but has a similar racing pedigree.

Company founder Erik Buell invested his own money into the new venture, followed by backing from Hero MotoCorp., the largest motorcycle manufacturer in India.

The company had been doing well on the racing circuit but struggled financially.

"The turn we recently took, after we thought we were moving forward, was unexpected. We thought we had secured funding, but in the end, we were not able to get the funding in place. Therefore we need to do the best we can under the circumstances for all parties in interest," Buell said in a statement.

The company is closed for now, Buell said, and is seeking protection under a state statute which is similar to federal bankruptcy law. Attorney Michael S. Polsky will be the court appointed receiver at the company's request. Bids will be solicited for the company as part of the Chapter 128 process, with the winning bid to be determined by the court.

"To say this setback is a disappointment does not begin to express what I feel right now. I am personally grateful for the support of our outstanding workers, customers and vendors. While this is a sad ending, I personally hope for a new and better beginning," Buell said.

Even though I was never a fan of Buell bikes, and I guess I'll never be, is sad to meet a company going out of business. I know Buell had a cult-like following.

I agree. I've never cared for the design or execution of his bikes, but I hate to see him fold up his tent.

OCLandspeeder has an 1125R, he and I swapped bikes one time, he rode the Duc and I rode the Buell. Great bike, plenty of torque, really fast and very easy to turn. Although the looks of Buell can be an acquired taste, the front of the 1125R looks like a praying mantis, they do have a following. Sad to see they're gone, would love to have seen another American manufacturer do well, especially since they were sport bikes. I'm really not a cruiser/bagged fan. Maybe if Obama did what "Ronnie Raygun" did for HD, they could stay in business!

Very bummed, another American company with the grit and determination closed again. Hopefully he'll bounce back one more time.
OCLandspeeders bike is a work of art, enjoyed chasing him a few times, bikes rock solid. :(

tariff beater 700 cc bikes are not the rage on the bean-tage market. Imagine all the tools and chit there, can see the vultures circling. :rip: EBR - I thought the bikes looked cool, never road the recent ones though.

The saddest part is that 126 people lost their jobs. I was actually surprised that they lasted as long as they did.

Entrepreneurs often have nine business ventures fail before they hit on the thing that succeeds. He could be back. The free market is a beautiful thing - and that's not sarcasm.

What about the WSB entry. Seems they are still racing, be it pretty close to last place like last year.

I wasn't much of a fan of HD Buell, but I really liked the EBR 1190rx. The sx is fugly, IMHO, but the market for supersport nakeds has definitely been big as of late. Maybe I can find a leftover on closeout :)
