Greetings, I just bought my first VFR — an '05 with 24,000 kms. Doing a few mods right now .. new K&N last week, 43/15 gears and new Metzlers today. Have a set of Motad stainless pipes and GPR Thunder cans on their way.

Does anyone know how much the stock 6th gen full exhaust system weighs? My new pipes and cans will weigh 8.0 kg. Just wondering how much weight I'm going to be saving.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hey Chris ... welcome aboard!

Where are you hailing from in Canada? I'm in Manitoba myself. :)

No idea on weight ... running stock on my 6th gen ('02)

I really like the silver and white on the 6th gens ... mine is black.

    Hey Jeff,

Thanks. I'm in Victoria. Spring has sprung here and the roads are dry! What about there?

It's been on and off - dry roads but cold now ... keeps bouncing between positive and negative temperatures. I managed to commute 45mins each way to work for the first time this year earlier this week (hit a high of 15*C).

That said, I've already put on over 1000km's in the past few weeks. :)

My '02 is almost bone stock right now:
    - I've beefed up the charging system wiring (ran 5 new wires from the RR - 2 to battery +, 2 to ground, and 1 to monitor wire to battery +)
    - Replaced main fuse holder and dinky stock undersized wire that burns out on everyones bikes.
    - Replaced some of the crappy undersized connectors with 5mm bullets (120A continuous load rating)
    - Givi Touring Windscreen
    - Givi 46L Top Case / 2x Givi 36L Panniers

** If you haven't already, DO THE WIRING MODS!! They are a MUST on this bike!

I have the following items on order / waiting to install:
    - Oxford Heaterz Touring Grips (Heated)
    - PAIR Valve Blocking Plates
    - ATLAS Throttle Lock
    - Convertibars (replacement clip-ons)

Wow, 1000 kms already this year!

Are the wiring mods you've done related to the stator/regulator problems I've heard about on the VFR? What generally causes these to fail? Is it a weak charging system?

The original 6th gen exhaust weighs a metric shit ton. We call them the boat anchor. At least 16lbs.

Sent from my phone, please forgive brevity and misspelling

Yes ... they allow a direct and redundant connection from the RR to battery.

The problem with the Honda wiring harness is that there are too many connectors, crappy connectors, and in some areas, undersized wire.

My charging system was recording ~13.5v prior to the the mod and it fluctuated. After the mod, I now get a steady 14.3v across the battery terminals, even with the hi-beams on.

If you want to make it even more rock solid, solder the wires between the RR and the stator ... I think I'll just replace mine with 5mm bullets as well. They will take massive loads and I know they conduct extremely well with very little loss.

Charging system is strong, but plug connections very commonly overheat and fail, those to/from the r/r and stator, top of starter solenoid and plug from ignition switch to harness. Unplug and inspect each, cleaning (or rewiring) where necessary.
