Ok finally know what's wrong with my 2001 VFR800FI.
After speaking to my mechanic, the bike has had a 3rd degree meltdown. The Stator is fried along with the RR. He is going to wire the new Stator directly to the RR. The Honda parts are silly expenaive. Could I please get some advise on the best stator and rr to get please?
I live in the UK. Thanks for any advise. i'lI'll get what people recommend.

I broke down in Vegas a couple years ago while on an extended roadtrip. OEM stator was back ordered and I wanted to get going so I ordered an after market from Wisconsin someplace. That one lasted only two years when I broke down again on another ectended road trip in Regina Saskatchewan. The after market stator was absolutely fried. I went back to OEM.

I know OEM parts can be expensive, but so are higher end performance parts. If you get a really cheap stator price wise, you have a really cheap stator period in my humble opinion.

I step back and yield to others more in the know.

On stators, I do prefer OEM Honda. The life on them by consensus from the viffer forums is around 45 - 50k miles. If I'm doing a charging system repair, I'll definately wack off the stock connector.

Really? I had no idea! I guess I was really on borrowed time in Vegas then. I was sitting at about 89K miles by that time I think.

I've got a rick's motosport mosfet R/R in mine for probably 10K miles now. No issues. I'll be getting a stator from them to install when my OEM finally dies (and it will)

There is no need to buy a new stator. It is possible to rewire an old stator. This can be done either by people who regularly offer such services, e.g. in an electrician's shop that specializes in electrical motors. Or alternatively you can do the re-winding by yourself if you get the correct wire size.

This is true. But have you ever rewired one? Counted the number of wraps of wire around each coil? placed the insulating paper in the right spot. Wrapped the wire with the correct number of windings and make them fit into a space which originally was wound by machine? Varnished and baked it? An that is the very basics. I have not rewound a stator but I have taken apart and rebuilt a 220V 30 A electric motor. We did this when I took my electrical education. More to show how it is done, then to realize why we do not do this anymore. We get machines to do this far cheaper and more efficient and consistent than man could.

But yes, it can be done.

And unless you got somebody in India to rewind it by hand it would probably cost you more than an off the shelf OEM one

Well, I haven't but I was seriously considering to try. However, I am told it costs $50 to get a stator this size rewired where I live. Considerably cheaper than buying a new one...but it's not really a question about money. What if a person needs a stator that is simply not for sale anymore? Then I reckon this is the only way in some cases.

electrex world also sells aftermarket stators. They're in the UK. I have one of their coils in a 400-4. They may have one for the VFR800

Don't let me stop you from trying. We did this in school to develop an understanding. You might also find the task relaxing. I wood-work as a hobby. I used to hate hand sanding. Now I quite enjoy that.
