I just cancelled my insurance on my 2007 VFR that I sold to a buddy. It colt me $163.00 per year with a$250 deduct. My new 2014 VFR800 will be here in two weeks and it is going up to $223. I guess being 60 helps in a few ways. I am with State Farm and have been for over 30 years.

Any time your insurance premiums go up, there are two things to do.

First: Call your current agent / carrier and ask them what's up and what they can do to help you. Being nice about it will do wonders for you.

Second: If that doesn't get what you need, go to a local agent and let them go shopping for you. Online insurance shopping is fine, but an agent will have a better idea of what carriers want to write what insurance and at what rates.

I know U.S. insurance, not Canadian, but the concepts are the same. It's possible that your current carrier decided that insuring bikes of that class is no longer profitable, so rather than canceling your policy, they adjust your premium to keep it profitable.

Oh yeah, and when insurance rates go up, blame the f*tard who couldn't keep the rubber side down. Premiums go up because of claims, not because the insurance company is greedy.

Good idea aboot calling an agent or a broker. Going online to get rates will get you a mailbox full of ads from insurers that say the SOS over and over. "We can save you X numero of pesos", on your insurance. What it looks like in Canada is that the number of insurers is relatively small so they can charge rates based on how much they can get.

The problem here in Manitoba, is that insurance is public, it's owned by the government, and the agency has a monopoly ... it's also a top earner for the government, so they have a high stake in it.

Going to an insurance agent won't help you up here in Canuckistan, you only have one choice and one choice only in our Province (and in many others). :(

In addition, MPI categorizes motor vehicle types .... motorcycles do not share from the same pool of premiums as the other motor vehicles on the road. They only draw from the premiums of other motorcyclists. While I don't expect other vehicle owners to subsidize my premiums, I think that there needs to be some level of share if two different vehicle types are in a collision, especially if the other vehicle (not the motorcycle) is at fault.
