My VFR has some unique chain care needs and I have never been sure exactly how I should go about doing chain maintenance. Every ride of my VFR requires at least a mile of dirt road travel and every return trip is the same. In the height of summer, when the road is the driest, the chain and rear wheel get coated with white rock dust. If I clean the chain in the shop at home I subject it to lots of dirt on the outbound trip. I can never really have a clean chain and I can never figure out when or what is the best approach to chain maintenance. Does anyone have any ideas? I was never a dirt bike guy but this seems like a dirt bike kind of problem.

ditto! Get rid of the petroleum grease which collects dirt and go to the wax which doesn't. Went there 3yrs ago and won't go back.

Or get a chain oiler. Auto or manual.

I am speaking from ignorance here, because I know nothing about a chain oiler, but wouldn't that create an awful mess as the dust and oil would literally be collecting layer by layer by layer from the repeated trips and oiling?

Chain Saver. It dries in only a few seconds and you can wipe off the excess so there is little for the dust to settle on. I fyou were to do this after a ride as opposed to just before, there would be the added time to ensure the lube dries,

Well, Jim, maybe it shouldn't be. Dupont has been convicted of mishandling posionous chemicals, polluting groundwater; and all the chemicals needed to produce teflon are toxic and who actually knows how they're disposed of ??

There are much more organic and eco-friendly ways to lube a chain !

Or we could ride pedal bikes and not spew toxins into the air from burning fossel fuels.

No, not really. If you're using gear oil as a lube it will keep the chain clean as it lubes. Yeah, the rear wheel will get dirty, but it's an easy clean up. A chain oiler will keep your chain cleaner and lubed too.

Remember, the issue here is not oiling the chain but the huge amount of dirt I ride through.

I have tried about all of them over the years and I use Dupont Chain Saver. But one thing I have found that i use on Dirt bikes is call Strike Hold. This stuff is really amazing and be used on everything from weapons to lawn mowers. On the dirt bikes it has been great, dirt comes off SO much easier. Read about it and give it a go. I also use it on parts of my boat trailer.

Dupont is a taxpayer-funded superfund cleanup offender and corporate polluter at nnumerous sites around the US. Boycotting an environmental criminal's products seems like simple logic and morality to me.

Meh. My grandfather worked for DuPont in Niagara for years and put food on the table doing it. I'll keep using their products.

Dupont is a company founded in 1802. It has has presided over many of the worlds advances in chemical usage and research. I am sure that over the last two centuries they have had their share of environmental damage both accidental and by design. By the same token that have brought many wonderful innovations to the marketplace. I am not sure that, if I buy a similar product from a different producer, that I am not unwittingly standing on the shoulders of this soiled but innovative giant.
