Hey guys and gals i have a problem with my 95 vfr...starting out my bike sits out side under a cover, no garage. i have been getting water in my gas causing it to die. after investigation i found the overfill drain tube was clogged allowing water that collects in the overfill lip to leak in to my tank. so i unclogged the tube, put her together filled her up and gas kept pouring out!!! so now i think that the water that got in to the tank rusted the internal overfill tube allowing gas to leak out. is there a sealant or coating that will fix this or do i need to find a new tank?

also currently i have the tube from the bottom plugged and i keep a garbage bag over the tank with the cover over the bike and it has been good since. so another option i thought of was looking for some type of completely sealed gas cap like a twist on or something. thoughts opinions?

    Thanks

Start simple. Drain the gas out if its not out already. Take a look in the tank. Does it look rusty? Check all your connections. Petcock operating normally?

Keeping the overflow tube plugged is not the right way to fix it. Heat from the engine will warm that gas(tank) up, and there's a reason there's an overflow.

Take a step back. Re-evaluate. And spend a little time looking at it with a fresh start.

sorry no pics...i havnt touched it sense last september :nono: bought a harley and was planning on selling the viffer but now im leaving towards selling the harley and keeping the viffer...next warm weekend ill try and get it apart and re-examine was trying to get some input on ways to approach the situation. im pretty confident its the internal tube that allows water or over filled gas that gets under that cap in to neck to drain off. bought the bike used with 40k miles im sure po plugged it for the same reason i did.

No fix to repair the drain tube, keeping it plugged is not the end of the world, just means you can't leave the bike in the rain because the water will get sucked back into the tank. You have to make sure you have removed all the water from inside the tank because it gets down into the lower corners and the only way to get it out is upending it.
