So, I saw this viffer on Craigslist and while it needs a new tire and back reg paid, it looked like it could be a bike worth throwing a little money at. So, I emailed the seller the following yesterday:

    Me:

This morning I received this reply:

    Seller:
    To which I replied:

    WTF?
I don't know this dork from Adam and yet he responds back like that? This fool is hiding something for sure!

From the ad: "i dont have the title but i do have a missing title statement from the registered owner and a bill of sale from him".

That and $4 will get you a coffee at Starbucks. It could be stolen, have a lien, be non-CA bike. And a new title is going to take you through the DMV and CHP inspections and paperwork, it ain't worth it.

Flag it. He states title status is clean, yet he doesn't have a title? like cap says, it could be stolen.

He is looking to take your money and wash his dirty little hands of title and registration issues.

I see your point and as TC said, he could be trying to peddle his problem off on someone else. But I also see his point. If he wants to sell the bike, why spend his time discussing matters with someone who has not said they were interested in buying the bike? If you had hinted that you were looking to buy another VFR, he may have answered your question.

    Another point of view.

He emailed me back earlier today.

    Seller:
Maybe he's legit, I don't know. The whole $400 on registration and no title in his name, I really don't know.

Not trying to hide anything, but failed to answer any of my questions. I mean, who wouldn't like to pick up a decent VFR for $2K? But, who knows if any maintenance has been done. I suppose someone could call him.

It really sucks, but that's the nature of craigslist anymore. Sellers think the buyers are scammers and the buyers think the sellers are. Plus the calls where people try to sell it for you. I bought my vfr and hurricane a month ago off craigslist...same short responses until I called and talked for a while. All the way my wife was worried I was getting scammed...sad world:(

Guilty until proven innocent I always say. Rather than buying or even talking to this asshole or taking a look at at the bike and the paperwork, IMO this is a job for Guido and Tony the Carlucci Brothers.

Iowa, yup your right..hard to trust these days.....shit bought my bike unseen and even sent a deposit before driving 300 miles to pick my it up.....but my seller was very open, took a ton of pictures for me, and was in his 40's, so a open and mature guy.....I bit the bullet, my wife also was suspicious I was getting scammed....seeing she just gave me her bonus check to buy it........

I have a friend who is constantly buying bikes, motors and anything else of Enfield twin vintage from craigslist and getting it shipped to Aus and he has never had the slightest problem. I used to shudder every time he paid for something but he says if you talk to the seller you usually get a good idea if he is the real deal. He even bought a motor that is sitting in my shed that was not even advertised, but he saw it in the corner of a photo of something else that was for sale

A little skepticism when using any online site including the big boys is fine. There is as much BS on any of those sites as on Craigslist or EBay. This does not of course include this site where every word is the gospel and is handed down from generation to generation.

Using an accusatory tone in print and not even making an attempt to get a look-see of the bike or a bike is not real smart.

My response to that line of questioning right off the bat would be very simply, "Fuck off dude."

Bought an older camera yesterday from a CL ad. Original ad was fairly descriptive and the pix looked good. The owner and I exchanged Emails a few times. I found he worked for the State of Oregon in Environmental Science. He lives aboot an hour+ drive from my hood. The pix were not JPEGs from a website. Easy to tell that. The seller offered to meet me half way between my place and his. Yep, I checked several sites for used camera stuff for sale prices.

We met and the guy was right on time. The deal was so good and the camera and associated equipment was so good ( a 9+) that even trying to save 25 pesos on the deal would have been unfair to both of us. So.. 300 pesos got me a Mamiya C330 Pro, three lens'. the associated focus screens, ten filters, a lens hood for the 65mm lens, the original instructions, A case for the camera and separate cases for the lens' and a camera bag in "Hand waxed premium cowhide, in primo shape that retailed for 53 pesos in the mid 1960s.
