camshaft sprocket/teeth are offset slightly...

Hello all. I recently purchased a 3rd gen VFR with approximately 45K miles. I checked the valve clearances and found one that is out of spec (cylinder 2, left intake). As I was removing the appropriate camshaft (front head, intake) to fit the new shim I noticed the teeth on the camshaft sprocket/gear are not lined up. It seems that the sprocket/gear is split into two halves and the teeth on opposite sides aren't in alignment (see picture below). I checked all the camshafts and the teeth are aligned like I expected. This is my first VFR. Is this normal? What does it indicate? Should I do anything about it? I searched for answer already but had no luck. Thanks so much for your help.

 

It's normal. They'll align when you install the cam. There should be a manual for download on the site.

Thanks vfrcapn. I'm glad I didn't screw anything up or have a part that's screwed up. Once I get the new valve cover gaskets I'm button her back up and see what happens.

 

Anti-backlash gear makes for quieter running. :listening_headphone:

Be sure to rotate the engine BY HAND to recheck the clearance you changed again after 2 or 3 revolutions while you listen and feel for unusual noises.:distrust:

 

Got it put back together and it was tough to get everything lined up but I figured it out. Before tightening down the camshaft in place I had to account for the new gear position after tightening rather than what it looks like just sitting in there (if that makes sense). Either way, everything came out okay. Now just need to figure out what's going on with the carbs.

 

Using a paint or punch or scribe mark on the gears before removal makes alignment alot easier later.
