Carb cleaning/rebuild

    Between the Clymer, factory manual, and online help, I can't find any useful info on rebuilding the VD carbs.

    Been trying to get the starter jet and jet needle holder out with no luck, just scorning the brass. WD-40, heat, etc, no luck.

    Haven't even got to the pilot screw yet, which i am stressing to do. Any tips and/or info i am missing?

    Careful there, some brass tubes are not removable without risk of damage, and without the Honda factory service manual at hand for reference this project could go wrong. :shame:

    Dirty carbs have the usual suspects: clogged idle jets first, so begin there. If you find redish dust in float bowls, you'll need to clean the fuel tank of rust and debris.

    Have pdf of Official Honda manual and hard copy of Clymer, both say starter jet comes out.

    Just some misambiguity of nomenclature here, i suspect !! Some refer to the long brass (non-removable !) tubes as starter jets since they carry fuel to the enrichment circuit to aid starting.I don't believe ANY manual says to remove those.

    Jets that always need removal are idle jet + mainjet along with its tube. Clogs of rust or gelled fuel in those are responsible for about 90% of carb repairs.

    If you can get use of an Ultrasonic cleaner if can help greatly with loosening the crud. When done always blow out all the air & fuel ways to remove the sludge.

    Didn't see this earlier. I also am having issues cleaning the start up jet. I would say they are not removable but the issue I'm having is that there is a weep hole at the base of the jet and that is as far as I can get it clear. Where does it come out inside the body? If I can figure that out I can probably purge it from the opposite end.

    Hope this helps. I found out where the jet goes. It took a while with a single strand of wire, an air compressor, and a lot of thought. Below are two pictures, the one showing the Starter Jet is pointing to the weep hole at the bottom of the jet housing. Plug this with your finger to push air/carb cleaner through to the the outlet (the other pictures). I blew air both ways and finally figured out the reason I wasn't seeing a lot of results is that the choke rod was out. I replaced it, pressed to seat, then put my air nozzle against the right hand hole (see picture) and finally felt a good flow of air out of the Starter Jet and the weep hole. Hope this helps.
