I still say it isn't excessive, how long did it take to do, probably 3/4 hour start to finish. I had a tire fitted yesterday on my Interceptor and while I was waiting I was watching other bikes in the shop have tires removed and refitted back on the bike and 3/4 hour goes pretty fast, it isn't like they are removing and refitting the same wheels on the same bike, every bike is different and requires a certain way of jacking up and removing the wheel and refitting it, not like they just jump on and off with the snap of your fingers, so my argument still stands. What is the charge out rate for a bike shop, min $100 an hour, so 3/4 hour for $80 is about right and he still had to get rid of 2 tires

I agree. Bikes are different. Some of them all loaded up with megafarkles make the wheels even hard to see.

In the Seattle shop I frequent, the drill is to go in, order the tires in or out of stock, make an appointment to get the tires changed out by either bringing in the removed wheels or just riding the bike in and waiting a few minutes to have the work done. Same deal and the same guy does chains and sprockets too. This particular guy is a private contractor who leases space for his equipment. He is a real wrench and very fast, on and off the racetrack.

Similar service and sales is also done at some bike rallyes. One that comes to mind are the BMW gigs..

Is 100/hr the going rate in your home shops? What sort of tax rates and added charges are applied? Here, that sort of thing is all over the map. Case in point: in Oregon there is no sales tax. There is a state income tax. Online purchases sent to Oregon are not charged sales tax. The Feds tried that nationwide, and it died, the argument being that the sellers would then be in effect tax collectors.

My guy here in LA, if ya buy the tire from him and like I just did a few days ago wanted a tire put on a different wheel..he charges $15 off..$15 on.
Think it was $45 if you buy off the internet and bring in both wheel and tire .
Said the internet is really screwing up his one man shop.

i live right by the u.s. border and know that local shops cannot compete against online u.s. companies , do you want to wait until most of the small motorcycle shops close because very few if any customers buy new product from them ? , or worse use them for fitment facilities before buying clothing online

Better than closing down the internet eh! This presupposes that all local shops are owned and run by these really great guys who are willing to negotiate some for a part or a service that is still able to turn a profit. This ain't the case. This also presupposes that A follows B follows C. This also presupposes that the Romans didn't make up "Caveat Emptor" to use in Latin Scrabble.

When I'm in Seattle I make every effort to buy local unless some serious pesos are involved or I can smell some dude who talks shit for a living. This goes back years. I have a Paris-Dakar jacket from Hein Gericke. Shop price was $533.00 and tax. Online it was $330.00 and shipping. In another scenario, I have a well worn Aerostitch two piece. Local? Nope..

Then we still have this mounting thing... Maybe find some Canadianharleydoods that are into that.. Look for them in the leather gear part of a Harley boutique on either side of the border.

I've see a few shops not only have different prices for changing tires on or off bike, but also if you were to buy from them versus elsewhere.

When I buy local it's usually because I want what I am after almost immediately or don't have time to deal with shipping to my companies UPS box, as I don't usually ship to the house for high dollar items. I had two computer monitors stolen from the patio as the shipper did not use the signature required method of sending them and I'm not always at home to sign for deliveries.

if you're truly upset that someone would charge more for changing your tires based on where you purchased them, then save up and buy a tire changer and never have to worry about being over charged again. Then buy the tires anywhere you see fit, but don't be surprised if someday the little shop on the corner is nothing more than a clothing sweatshop because labor is the only thing they can make a profit on.

How timely is this? As I'm looking through one of my shop manuals I stumbled upon this little note...

I guess I am lucky in that I can go to Wheels In Motion in Canoga Park and get a killer price on tires, usually times beating online retailers. If I have them install and I buy there, it's a great price, i.e. PR4 tires, if I bring in my wheels, is $350 out the door, tax included. The owner buys huge amounts of tires and sells them cheap. He also gets tons of other business by the people buying tires from him, because of it. I have bought almost all of my tires there. For Michelins, I can't find a better price.

Now what we need to do is have the dudes at Wheels In Motion open up a shop in Tasmania.

Talked to a guy once who had the Harley Dealership in Palm Springs California. Desert resort type place. He told me he made good money selling bikes but his biggest profit margin was in outfits. This even before Harley went boutiquey.. His, hers, his and hers, his and his and hers and hers. Some variations on those themes too.

I looked up Tas.. Interesting place.. Included was a list of famous folks from there. They missed Errol Flynn..

The cruiser ratio is a bit high. Special dispensation in the noise laws also apparently but only for Harley... WTF.

So many good roads with corners down here. Wasted on wet fart sounding highway boutiquey motherships
