Wiring harness recall?

    Hi World, I've been reading comments in a few places about a possible recall or repair to VFR wiring harnesses. Is this ongoing and what is involved in checking if this is applicable?

    I have an '92 VFR750 that has a dying in traffic problem as a result a bike shop replaced my stator and regulator last summer. They kept the bike at an off site garage for over 2 weeks and while on the 'final' road test the starter solenoid and it's harness shorted out (!). It was replaced but the harness is now covered in silicone. Each day another item was checked out and led to another delay in completion.

    In the end, and with an enormous bill, I got the bike back. The battery was not changed so I assume it was tested and passed. After 2 weeks of regular commuting in traffic the original problem of dying on the road reoccurred and kept happening with increased frequency. The regulator is a Honda part for a CBR600. When I looked into it further the reg was extremely hot! Is that normal is is it an incorrect part or has the battery, which has since failed, been the cause of this overheating reg.

    I now have a new battery to put in but want an opinion if it will be harmed by the overheating regulator?

    Ok, I found a few treads about the recall harness.

    How can I determine if I have an original or replaced harness?

    A couple things:

    First, the wiring harness recall was issued for 02-05 models. Any Honda dealer can run your VIN to tell you if its been done or not. Rumor has it that if the recall was done, a hole punch was supposed to be put on/in your VIN on the bike. Whether or not this is true, I wouldn't rely on it. Find out by running your VIN. Or call Honda N/A. If you had your bike in a Honda shop, and they didn't check it, its time to find a new shop.

    As for your R/R, stator and such: Click this link below. Look specifically at post number 9. In order to get the proper results, your battery has to be fully charged (and yes, a bad R/R will ruin a new battery). If the shop you were working with just randomly replaced the parts without looking through all the connections, its quite possible you could have the same issue again (cooking the stator and R/R). Your R/R should NOT be too hot to touch. If it is, not a good sign.

    No point in taking a 92 to a shop to have things repaired, they don't have access to the fault finding that goes on in these forums. Admittedly with many forums you get all sorts of useless information but if you sit down and carefully ask questions here you should be able to get this sorted, certain things on these bikes cause the problems you are having and charging problems are what you are having and doing the drill is what you will have to start working at, one step at a time, you can get it working but don't waste any more money on it at some shop, very quickly the dollars spent are more than the value of the bike

    Or perhaps you know a good garage mechanic who won't charge an arm and a leg? Sometimes the dealers will point you there because the dealers do not want to work on motorcycles that are 24 years old.

    Ok, thanks Norm and Alaskan.

    When I get my work shop heating I will start testing components and renewing ground connections.

    It's an old bike but newer than I've had before.
