Ok long story short I gave this bike to my brother so that he could ride with me. A few winters ago I went to visit and found the bike outside covered with SNOW and no tank or carb's on her.
So I took her back. Now the hard part starts my son wants to ride and wants to ride this bike . So I am rebuilding it from the ground up.

I have the heads off and can not seem to get the crankcase to come apart is there a trick to this? any help would be great.

How can any VF "rebuild" NOT include a nice fresh set of engine bearings and piston rings...............which have been out of stock for decades ? With some bikes you can't get enough new replacement parts to assemble a reliable engine after the first one quit.

Invest your money into a newer can o' crap and ditch the sentimentality. Always better to try getting the engine running--or making a compression test-- b4 striping it apart, why'd you remove heads ? Missing carbs could slow the project. If the engine turns easily using the crank-end, possibly no need to get inside. Don't know how big or old your son is, but heavy bikes like the VF don't make good first bikes for most new riders.

Naturally, the closest possible attention to the Honda service manual would be necessary to accomplish any such engine "rebuild".

John it is general advice not an opinion, Squirel knows his stuff on these early first gens and if people don't want advice, so be it, makes no difference financially to any of us but chucking good money down the drain isn't such a good idea, but as I said, good luck I hope it works out ok

Thanks John the link will help for sure! As far as the opinion's go I don't mind I am sure they have their reasons but what they don't have is the full picture of why I want to rebuild this ride!

The reasoning is that that run of VFRs was not all that great a bike. The sentimentality and passing of the torch aside.

At least it ain't a Harley.

Billy it is a VF not a VFR and parts are really hard to find for them
