Certain engines have unbelievable sounds, my old high performance 289 was sweet, but one of the best sounding engines I ever heard was a 427 Ford in a dragster years ago. That Ducati sound ranks up there.

Try running a VFR without a muffler sometime.

I think if I got on a bike as fast as that V4 Duc sounded, chills would be soon followed by some serious puckering.

Gotta say that almost any real race engines sound great!

I remember being at Watkins Glen when Honda introduced their Grand Prix engines, I think the Cosworth's & Ferrari's only turned about 10-11k and then the Hondas where turning 16K, what a sound.

The sound of power is intoxicating, on one flight, our 727 broke a fuel line and had to return to the gate where they fixed it, with the mechanic on a scaffold next to the engine, the pilot proceeded to run the throttle up all the way, at the gate! Unbelievable.

A good thing.. Pretty sure the first public showing of the Honda 250 GP bike was at the 1960 Sacramento Mile. Yamaha had some 125 two stroke racebikes that were turning close to 20K rpm.

This maybe one of those bike stories but it sounds good.

When Ago hit the big time, his English was not the King's. Some of the Brit fast guys taught him some English. BTW, the guy was movie star handsome and the chicas were all over him.

The English lesson so it is told was they taught him to say "Hello, my name is Giacomo Agostini and I would like to fuck your sister."

I was at an "indy" type race at Texas International one year. During intermission somebody ran a CBX uncorked around the oval a couple of times. The high crashwalls caused the sound to bounce and echo. More sound than the cars.

Back in the eighties down in the infield at Laguna these three guys on there uncorked CBX's would have there front wheels joined and sit there and at the same time doin burnouts, smoking cigars and drinking beers. We called it the dueling CBX's. Thats untill the Sheriff had a heart attack while all the crazies where doing burnouts and setting pallets ablaze.
They brought out the riot squad with there dogs. After that the next year at 10 pm they would say over the sound system..OK ITS QUITE TIME, for all us camping
    Good times

Heard the same thing as well, pretty sure its true. Saw him couple of years ago at Goodwood FOS, he was nearly 70 then and still a good looking dude. There was a rumour that Yamaha had some 50cc grand prix bikes in the early sixties that had 24 speed gearboxes!
    Suzuki built this though http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=412922

Somebody posted another Ago story here recently. He was riding in some Euro event. The Alps I think when the need for speed took him. Off he went leaving the pack. Fast guys are fast guys and still rare.

Those 50's were amazing. Saw a few demo laps on a couple, years ago at Willow Springs. I recall they had 14 speed gearboxes. One was a Kriedler.

Japans top guy was Itoh.. He was Yamaha's rider in the Catalina Grand Prix.

I had heard years back that they used the Honda 250cc 6 cylinder for some of the engine sounds in the opening of the movie "Grand Prix" in 1966. Sure sounds like it's in there right at the beginning and about the 1 minute mark.
