I'm a new guy. Apart from sounding better at low RPMs, if there a genuine performance advantage in swapping-out the silver stock muffler? Do I then need to get the bike remapped?

If all you are doing to a stock bike is changing the exhaust can, then no you do not need to remap. The only real "performance gain" to be had is the weight loss. Oh sure, you may gain 1 or 2 HP, but the 15lbs you just lost will make more of a difference. The OEM exhaust is a fricken boat anchor.

One thing to pay attention to on the can if you decide to replace it; if you have luggage or plan to get it, you are not going to want a high mount. Just FYI.

Don't disagree with most of the above ,but would losing 15lb make a performance difference, dont think so, maybe in a race with professional rider, otherwise ?Find it quite amusing when manufacturers go on about how they have trimmed a few pounds off the new models, would be better if they just handed out diet sheets :)

Very few bolt-on parts ever make a huge output difference on any machine, be it a bike or a car, usually it's to sound like it's more powerful, not to actually make it so.

Few riders are going to be able to keep up with the performance capabilities of a modern bike (even a sport tourer like the VFR12), so if all you're interested is getting faster, take some advanced rider courses or invest in some trackdays.

Power-to-weight is the key, and if you can't improve one, you improve the other :)

Thanks for the considered opinions. I think I'll let the silver can sit for a while.
