Hi, Im Pat... im new. :hi2:

I recently got an 2002 from a buddy of mine. It sat in the garage for 3 years before i started showing it some love. I had changed all of the brake fluid (brakes+clutch) and had been riding it for at least a month.

All of a sudden I was in traffic and it started to over heat on me (250 f) i got it home and changed the coolant, still nothing. The fan does come on at 215 until it cools back down to ~200 just sitting idle.
So I decided to try running it around the block, and every time i dropped form N to 1st the bike stalled. If i held the clutch and tried 2nd it clicks like the clutch isnt disengaging. So I changed the oil and still have the same thing there too. If I look in the crank case I can see the clutch move, and the lever is not spongy at all.
Although, i thought when in neutral the gearbox didnt move? mine spins, even if i hold the clutch lever i can see it separate, but still seems to be engaged...

Maybe one in the same, possibly separate issues, any ideas? because i dont... :noidea:

(I did have this posted in the 6th gen section but figured this was better.)

Take the slave cylinder off, clean the rod that runs through to the clutch (they sometimes get buildup & stick), & clean out the valve fir ths slave. Mine had years of crap but up in it. Just bleeding it won't work.

overheating as you've described is USUALLY caused by an air pocket. Set the bike on the SIDE stand (slight uphill helps) with a cold engine & top off the radiator then tun it with the cap off & keep topping off as the level drops until it stops dropping.

Then check and top off again after it cools from your first 10 mile ride. :cool-new: Consider replacing your radiator cap as they can fail after a few years.:frown-new: Stalling problem when shifting to first seems like a sidestand switch failure. :congratulatory:

When it over heated in traffic on me, I had ZERO coolant. Since then i haven't gotten to ride it. So as of right now i am going to assume my over heating issue... isn't an issue. just because it hits ~200 F just sitting does not mean its overheating necessarily. (250+ F and not cooling back down w/ the fans)

I did get the bike to shift tho. I checked the oil level again and had a bit too much, drained a quart or so to where it should have been and shifted just fine.

Feel like an idiot now... but thanks for the responses! :cower:

Huh ?? The issue is: where did all your coolant go ?? Empty radiator suggests a leak somewhere. You need a new radiator cap too.

    Wake up, Bunkie !

Minimum BASIC MAINTENANCE checks on any new bike BEFORE you ride would include verifyin oil level, coolant level, brake and clutch fluid levels and routine bleedin. If snot poifectly clear, replace fluid, and finally, set tar pressures. Not checking these things first is way T00000000ooooh doggone risky and could result in injury or other unpredictable serious damages.

In fact, it's negligence not to.

Be sure to verify charging system health (13.5-14.5 dc volts) befo ridin o ya'll be stumblin long home in yo Levi trouzers and yo hemet, stoppen at every 4th bar on de way back in de rain home, Dogg !!!!!!!!

Plenty a info here about charging problems, if ya need it.
