well this is my first issue with my new toy,its an 84 interceptor 1000.did the basic cleanup and ck for things that past mechanics screwed up.found a few too.while running the battery voltage is around 13.5 to 14.5 but the 3 yellow wires comming from the stator where it connects to the regulator(right next to coolant overflow bottle) got real hot and melted the connector.the regulator itself gets pretty warm also.are the 3 yellow wires the same?can they be crimped anyway ?seems to be charging but i know that they shouldnt get that hot.I put 3 new butt connectors on for now until I hear from someone that knows.heres some pics http://www.bikepics.com/members/nrfixit4818/84vfr1000r/
The three yellow wires are interchangeable, it doesn't matter if you match them up the same as before. But they do need to remain as three wires, you can't just bundle them all into one. It's a very common problem, for these wires to melt. Sometimes that connector can even catch fire. Honda used too small a wire and too small a connector. There's an upgraded part for that connector available from Honda but even those can melt. Some folks just solder in an extra section of wire, and attach them direct without a connector. Personally I prefer to use the upgraded connector, and then to keep a close watch on it, make sure it stays very clean, coat well with dialectric grease, check it at every oil change. Use solder, and make sure you do a really good job. No wimpy crimp connectors, those things will just melt again.
Broke out the big weller soldering gun today and double heat shrinked each wire,I used to have my own electronics bussiness so this was a piece of cake.thanx man.changing the oil today trying to find a magnetic oil plug, going to autozone right now.
